Q: do you need a gutter? I have a valley on my roof and was going to connect chain to that. Is that too much water?

Yes, you need a gutter. Yes, a valley is too much water...unless it's a very gentle rain. When it rains hard, even with the gutter, it takes a drain guide to make it come straight down the chain. It is a wonderful rain chain. I love it! But it should be hung properly with an attachment at the bottom to hold it steady.

Q: I want to order this for the corner of my front porch. Do I need to get another part to attach it to the gutter?

You don't have to get the 'gutter attachment' piece to install the rain chain, but I got it and I think it gives the rain chain a more finished, professional look (rather than just having a hole in the gutter). It only costs about $15.00. See my photo in my review of the gutter attachment.

There's a clip that comes with it that just attaches into your downspout. You can also buy a kit that is a little more involved but the clip worked fine for me.

If you are inquiring about this serving as a replacement for a gutter, I definitely wouldn’t recommend it. If you are installing it like it is meant to be used (as a chain, held in a vertical position), then yes. However, it does not replace the purpose of gutters. Gutters collect water and the downspouts move the water away from your foundation. These chains are primarily decorative.
