This film gets a mix or ratings and for good reason, but honestly 5 stars is way out.The acting is impressive, hence why I haven't given it 1 star, but other than that it's pretty poor.It's a dark and depressing look at life without any hints of hope, fortunately life is not like that.The jumbled-up time frame didn't bother me but I have seen it done much better in other films, but the ultimate fault with this film is lack of light and shade. It doesn't really have a begining, middle and end, it just plods steadily on giving you neither massive highs or lows. If you were to edit it into the correct timeline it would be incredibly boring, certainly not the two hours it takes to tell what little story there is.it's a real shame as there are some great actors that deserve better. Oh and 21 grams... What a tenuous title.

Carrying the poisoned cargo of a screwed-up past coupled to a temptation-filled present - ex convict Jack Jordan is a train wreck just waiting to derail - yet again. At least at the hands of Preacher John (the ever stunning Eddie Marsan) Jack has discovered God and this has given him strength ("Jesus gave me that truck..."). But Jack still seems to be heading for that mental meltdown no matter how hard he believes and the inevitable loss of his freedom, his job and his family.Mexican Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu had made the brilliant "Amores Perros" in 2000 and it went a long way to drawing in huge talent like Sean Penn, Naomi Watts and especially Benicio Del Toro (as Jack Jordan). Not conventionally structured - 2004's "21 Grams" uses the device of back and forward in time flashbacks to offer up a story of accidents and loss and extreme pain and how ordinary people cope with it (or not as the case may be).The structure is odd and at times grating - but it brilliantly unfolds the story so you slowly twig what's happened and to whom. One minute Jack Jordan is clean-shaven happily waving to his friends by his pick-up - the next he's in a prison shower again with a towel around his neck (and he isn't trying to clear up his zits). Sean Penn's character Paul River's is wheezing on a ventilator while he sneaks a cigarette from a pill bottle stash in the bathroom in one scene - then is healthy and immaculately suited in the next scene as he ogles a woman in a swimming pool (Naomi Watts) he seems overly interested in for a married man. One moment he's raising a glass of wine with his friends celebrating an organ transplant that has literally saved his life - the next Paul is lying in a hospital bed looking battered with tubes in his mouth - ruminating on the size of the bodyweight you lose when you die (the film's title).In between all of this we keep returning to a father (a brilliantly subtle Danny Huston) on his mobile to his wife. He is clearly not paying enough attention to his two young daughters giddily chasing a bird on the footpath ahead of him. As the three pass out of shot - leaves are blown ahead as a familiar-looking truck races past - and a few moments later (still out of shot) there's an ominous screech of tyres...While Sean Penn is typically magnetic - the movie belongs to Benicio Del Toro who straddles it like a malevolent colossus. In the 'Making Of' the Director says you need only point the camera at him and magic will happen - worlds going on behind a glance. Yet somehow (and there are repulsive scenes with his family) Del Toro fills his tattooed enraged Jordan with such gravitas that you empathise with his gradual loss of faith rather than judge him. In one scene he begs a startled man to kill him - end his torment - and you don't for a second think that he doesn't really mean it.But special praise should also go to the women who are simply astounding and in some cases act the showier male names off the frame. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays Sean Penn's wife Mary Rivers obsessed with having a child even if their relationship is disintegrating - while Melissa Leo plays the wife of the God-obsessed Jack Gordon trying to keep him out of jail and her family together (both are simply superb). But it's Naomi Watts who blows you away. There is a scene where she has to go the hospital to check on her husband and two daughters only to be given unfathomable news. As a parent you physically shake and ache with her harrowing disintegration (she's that good). The only other times I've ever seen this sheer acting power is in "Bright Star" about the life of poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne that has Abbie Cornish give the same kind of mind-blowing performance (see review) and Marion Cotillard's unbelievable performance in the Edith Piaf biopic "La Vie En Rose".With a 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio (the full screen is filled) 'adequate' best describes the BLU RAY picture quality. It isn't great by any stretch of the imagination featuring many indoor and night scenes with an ever-present pallor of grain. Shooting was all about feel and immediacy - and prettily framed suburbia was never going to be part of the equation. But I'd still say that the power of the watch quickly dissipates any qualms on that front. The only subtitle is English for the Hard Of Hearing.There's also a great "In Fragments" Making Of where the Director gets all the cast and crew to throw red roses in the air at the start of shooting and white roses when they finish. Each of the principal actors get spots and they're praise and love of the work is palatable. Icing on the cake is Gustavo Santaoialla's stunning score of electric and acoustic heavy guitar strums (like a Mexican Ry Cooder). Gustavo also embellished "Babel" and "The Motorcycle Diaries" with the same emotion-tugging power.Nominated for 2 Oscars and 5 Baftas - "21 Grams" is visceral cinema peopled with a plethora of actors giving 1000% to a script they know is hard-hitting yet somehow real world redemptive. Inarritu would go on to make the equally brilliant "Babel" and the seriously harsh "Biutiful".In 2014 you can pick up the stunning "21 Grams" for five quid on BLU RAY - and that's a skydiver well spent in my book...

A film that could only exist if a genius like Inarritu associates himself with a production and cast of absolute genious'.A film that needs to be watched more than once to fully appreciate how good it is, it is difficult to rip your eyes away from the screen, with such an unorthodox yet intriguingly poetic style and with some of the most intense acting I've ever witnessed.The cast is so believable it could be a documentary if it wasn't for the stunning direction and editing ,which could be argued, is such a mismatch to the non linear style. It really feels like it shouldn't work (the first time I watched it I hated it) it felt unnecessarily complicated but with every viewing after that I realised that a linear story would of made this just another film but because of the style it holds you to the story. There really is nothing bad to say about it, it's a film that true film lovers should watch because as confusing as it is, whilst watching it, it all makes perfect sense in the end, after the second or third viewing. If you enjoy pretty colours and loud explosions like every Micheal Bay film ever made then don't watch it because it will make your head hurt.

If you like gritty real life drama, that is as disturbing as it is sad then I would highly recommend this. Read the blurb and if it sounds like your thing buy it. A great cast who are all at their best is the icing on a top notch cake.On a slightly different note :Second had DVD's are an absolute steel at the moment, 1p + £1.26 p+p for many great titles. I got a Blu-ray player over a year ago and after buying about 30 or so Blu-rays I have reverted back to DVD's. Many Blu-rays are straight DVD ports and are therefore of exactly the same quality. New blockbuster films, Iron man 3, Man of steel etc are of such a high DVD standard that after a couple of minutes watching you forget that its not on Blu-ray. If you have money to spare then there is no harm in getting them but for everyone else I just can't see the point. My TV is a 46" LED Samsung, maybe if yours is larger then the extra cost might be worth it. Right now I'm just thankful that its helped to send the cost of great films on DVD, like this, plummeting to record lows!Fantastic!

Waited a long while to watch this and to be honest i'm not a great fan of Sean Penn, but it was worth it. Fantastic introduction to characters with a winding - albeit sometimes confusing - story-line that edges slowly toward enlightenment. An easy 2 hours to enjoy with people that enjoy something deeper than your regular spoon-fed movie.

Where has this film been for the past 13 years?! How could I have missed it. First the acting was incredible, the heart-rending scenes (won't elaborate) were as if for real. The story had twists and turns as the plot gradually unfolded and all the strings came together. I get so fed up with light films with predictable plots and same old same old. Very good film and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something which is a cut above lots of other stuff.

"21 Gramm" könnte die Antwort sein, obwohl die eigentlich nicht (mehr) wichtig ist. Aber, jede/r fragt sich (obwohl der Film ganz anders ist, muß ich an die Antwort "42" denken - eine andere Geschichte. Bin, glaube ich nicht die einzige), warum gerade 21 Gram. Es ist nur eine Zahl, noch etwas, dass drei verschiedene Menschen samt ihren Nächsten, für einige Zeit zusammenbringt. Nicht, dass sie es sich gewünscht hätten, es ist/war das Schicksal, das ihnen einen Strich durch ihr Leben macht, machen wird...Als ich zum ersten Mal den Film des Regisseurs Alejandro González Iñárritu aus dem Jahr 2003 gesehen habe, fühlte ich - fast nichts. Ich tat mich schwer mit der Geschichte. Die "Sprünge" in der Erzählung waren/sind teilweise so schnell, variieren ungleich, dass man sich verliert. Da würde ich die P sehr nur schwer vergeben...Nach Jahren habe ich mir den Film nochmal(s) angetan. Eine faire Chance hat er verdient. Dazwischen habe ich ALLE Filme von Iñárritu gesehen. Er steigert sich, die Oscars (gleich drei) hat er verdient.Ich werde nicht zu lange bei dem Inhalt verweilen. Es ist ein Film, eine Geschichte, die nach und nach wirkt, die Reminiszenzen hinterlässt. Die Fragen, wann wir etwas ähnliches gesehen haben, stellen sich zwangsläufig ein. Sie sind da, weil Iñárritu mit der Geschichte "spielt". Er gibt uns einige Sequenzen, Szenen, einige Sätze, einige Ereignisse...geht wieder zurück, verweilt und wechselt schnell in die Zukunft.Wann die Gegenwart (der Story) mit der Vergangenheit und mit der Zukunft verschmilzt, ist schwierig zu beantworten. Es beginnt und endet in einem sterilen Krankenhauszimmer, wo man die Apparate sieht, hört, die Herzfrequenz wird auf dem EKG gezeigt...48, 40, dazwischen gerade Linien...Noch weiß der/die Zuschauer*in nicht die ganze Geschichte, wird jedoch schnell hineingezogen und muß aktiv bleiben, wenn er den Film mit dem Herzen sehen will.Da ist der Mathematikprofessor, Paul River (Sean Penn), der nur mit einem neuen Herzen überleben kann...für sein Leben muß eine Person, ein Mensch STERBEN. Das weiß er und er wartet ab. Seine Frau Mary (Charlotte Gainsbourg) wartet mit ihm. Sie WILL ein Kind von ihm, hat ihm aber verschwiegen, dass sie einmal einen Ab. gehabt hat. Damals wollte sie aus Angst das Kind nicht behalten. Es kam zu Komplikationen und nun muß sie auf die künstliche Befruchtung hoffen. ZWEI Menschen, die von der Medizin, von der Technik und vom Vorschritt abhängig sind. Beide in ihrer Weise auch egoistisch, wobei man Paul natürlich leichter verstehen kann...Da gibt es die Familie Peck, Cristina (Naomi Watts) war drogensüchtig, nun ist sie glückliche Mutter zweier Töchter, die Ehefrau von Michael (Danny Huston). Sie schwimmt sehr gerne, ihr Leben ist fast wolkenlos...Ein anderer Mann, Jack Jordan (Benicio del Toro), der aus dem Gefängnis wegen kleineren Straftaten entlassen wurde, versucht mit seiner Ehefrau Marianne (Melissa Leo) und zwei Kindern auch ein Leben zu führen, in dem er zu etwas bringen wird. Er arbietet auf dem Golfplatz, wo die Spieler verlangen, man solle ihn entlassen, weil er einige Tätowierungen hat. Das stört die feine Gesellschaft. Aber er hat einen Truck, denn er bei Tombola gewonnen hat. Da hat er zum Gott gefunden und will ein ehrliches Leben führen...Eine Kreuzung, eine Sekunde anderswohin sehen oder nichtsehen....und das Leben hat sich verändert. Die Toten können nicht klagen, einer kann helfen. Sein Herz schlägt nun in der Brust von Paul. Eine Familie verschwindet, eine Frau bleibt allein und kann nur noch mit Alkohol und Drogen das "Leben" meistern...Fragt sich (nicht) jeder Mensch, der ein "fremdes" Herz hat und jetzt leben darf, WEM dieses HERZ gehört hat? Was für ein Mensch er oder sie war... Habe ich mit dem Herz auch etwas von seinem Wesen bekommen?Paul fragt sich monatelang und erfährt, wer der Spender war. Sein Herz schlägt jetzt, seine Ehe ist aber am Ende. Er sieht die einsame Cristina und verliebt sich in sie. Sie kommen sich nur langsam näher, Cristina ist enttäuscht, als sie erfährt, dass Paul die ganze Zeit gewusst hat, wessen Herz er hat...Die Zeit könnte für sie arbeiten. Es geht nicht ums Vergessen, es geht um geteiltes Leid. Um erste Schritte zur einer gewissen "Normalität".Doch der Täter lebt und einmal kommt der Tag, an dem sich die Opfer fragt, WARUM...Der Kreis schließt sich.Was mach den Film besonders? Die Story ist auf jedem Fall präsent, stark, traurig...man kann sich mit der Geschichte gut identifizieren. Die Gefühle sind real, der Ärger, die Ohnmacht der Schmerzen, die auch die stärksten Drogen nicht mindern können, ist fast nicht auszuhalten. Das NICHTSTUN, das Warten, die Gleichgültigkeit, "was habe ich noch zu verlieren, ich habe mich selbst schon längst aufgegeben". Anstelle sich des Lebens zu erfreuen, fühlt man sich schuldig. Habe ich dieses Herz verdient?Wenn man sich in den Fragen verliert, verschwindet auch jenes Glücksgefühl, das man in Träumen gesehen und sogar geschmeckt hat. Das Glück zu leben, gesund zu sein, zu arbeiten, normal zu sein, all das schwindet, je mehr man über die Vergangenheit der anderen weiß.Die Ärzte sind der Meinung, man solle den Spender nie namentlich kennen (außer bei den Transplantationen, in denen kein Leben verloren geht). Ist das überhaupt möglich? Die Neugier ist eine starke Droge, die gefährlich sein kann.Man bleibt mit dem Wissen immer allein, niemand hat eine Antwort, was zu tun ist. Sich bei der Familie bedanken, schweigen, leiden...Nichts ist einfach.Die Schuldfrage wird zum zentralen Punkt. Leider destruktiv. Glücklich sein und ein Leben aufbauen auf den "Kosten" des anderen...Es ginge noch weiter. Die einzige Möglichkeit, die uns bleibt, wird hier am Ende gezeigt. Und das macht den Film wertvoll. NICHT der Beste von Iñárritu, obwohl mit Preisen überhauft, aber ein Thema, das aus einer anderen oder gleich mehreren Perspektiven gezeigt wird.Die Schauspieler sind sehr gut, wobei ich Iñárritu etwas übel nehme. Er hat das Potenzial von Charlotte Gainsbourg NICHT gesehen. Ihre Rolle ist zu klein, sie passt nicht zu dieser Ausnahmeschauspielerin. Schade.Benicio del Toro - wie immer - sehr gut.Unsere Steffi (My Girl) hat den Film am 16.10.2016 mit 4 P bewertet, unser lieber Doc hat ihn 2 P gegeben und das auch erklärt.Meine Meinung hier - 5 P leider nicht. Zu sprunghaft und manchmal etwas "verloren"...

The film is worth watching, but it's a bit too heavy in a rather artificial way. There are entanglements that aren't very plausible in terms of fateful encounters and relationship development. If you are fine with the idea of watching a movie of repeated death and loss, illness and addiction ... you are safe.The definite quality of the film is the narrative technique that disregards chronology and classic transitions from one scene to another. Not even the flow of memory or one character's stream of consciousness are considered good enough to structure the film. The succession of scenes and events is apparantly random or accidental, but that is of course deliberate. At some point we even see a mixture of distant omniscient narrative perspective and inner monologue. Otherwise the film avoids the subjective and presents things as back and forth flashes that disrupt the axis of time.

Er ist kein Engel - wer ist das schon. Madonna weiss es wohl am Besten. Herausragend aber die schauspielerische Leistung. Benicio brilliant ebenso. Empfehlenswert in jeglicher Hinsicht!!!!!

Zu Beginn des Filmes fand ich es etwas schwierig zu folgen, da viele Sprünge gemacht werden und man noch nicht wirklich versteht, worum es eigentlich geht. Es lohnt sich aber definitiv weiterzuschauen. Nach und nach fügt sich alles zusammen und ergibt einen spannenden, berührenden Film über Schuld, Liebe und Rache.

« 21 Grammes » est le deuxième volet, sans aucun doute le plus réussi, d'une trilogie d'Alejandro González Iñárritu.Le mari et les deux petites filles de Christina Peck (Naomi Watts) sont tués dans un accident de la circulation par le pick-up de Jack Jordan (Benicio Del Toro), un ex-taulard en pleine rédemption et touché par la foi en Jésus. Le caeur du mari de Christina est offert pour une transplantation à Paul Rivers (Sean Penn), un prof de math. au seuil de la mort. Le film s'attache à analyser le destin croisé de ce trio : les liens qui vont les unir et les blessures qui vont les opposer. Sur fond d'amour et de mort, l'auteur nous fait habilement réfléchir sur le sens de la vie.Le scénario est basé sur de très nombreux « flash forward » dont l'explication s'esquisse de plus en plus précisément tout au long du film. La réalisation est faite de scènes intenses et généralement très courtes. La photo est magnifique et renforce la puissance du scénario. Les trois acteurs principaux sont sublimes, avec une mention spéciale à Naomi Watts.Le reproche principal que l'on peut faire au film vient de son « jusqu'auboutisme », de sa volonté d'aller chercher, parfois artificiellement et un peu lourdement, des situations de plus en plus extrêmes. « 21 Grammes » aurait sans doute pu se passer de cette montée incessante aux extrêmes pour rester plus simple et plus crédible.

Alejandro González Iñárritu ist wieder einmal ein Meisterwerk gelungen.Über den Inhalt des Films möchte ich nicht zu viel verraten, da ich diesen Streifen jedem empfehlen kann, der die Filme von Alejandro González Iñárritu zu schätzen weiß (z.B. Biutiful, Babel).21 Gramm schildert die Geschichte dreier Personen, die unwiderruflich miteinander in Verbindung stehen. Wer auf solch zusammenhängende Geschichten steht ist bei 21 Gramm genau richtig aufgehoben. Dieser Streifen sollte in keiner anständigen DVD-Sammlung fehlen.Zum Schluss noch kurz zur Lieferung von amazon.de: Wieder einmal wurde eine Kunde vollständig zufrieden gestellt - prompte Lieferung und keine Beschädigung der Ware - DANKE!

This is a classic interwoven several stories over the same timeline film,with flashbacks and interwoven subplots ala 'Crash".Benecio Del Toro's story is heartbreaking(as they all are)and this superlative actor steals the show.One of the few films I sought out on import sites.MichaelD

A great, great story.. to me, as a Christian, it speaks volumes of my own struggle, but what an amazing abstraction that brings in so many different dimensions, ways of reading and associating with the heroes - a true story of redemption, of finding a proper time and place to die.. to be born!

Ja also wenn man darauf steht, ist schon recht anstrengend der Film und für 12 jährige sicherlich nichts. Meine Mutter wollte den Film unbedingt, ich persönlich muss ihn mir nicht nochmal anschauen, schaue lieber leichtere, heitere Filme.Ansonsten eine recht gute interpretation eines Dramas

Great movie. Sean Penn and Naomi Watts are outstanding. Probably the best role I've seen Naomi Watts portray. She is very sympathetic and believable. Sean Penn is convincing as an organ recipient. A bit depressing but well worth watching.

Dieses Vi3deo konnte man nicht abspielen. Ich habe es auf verschiedenen Geräten versucht. Die CD war nicht verkrazt o.ä. Trotzdem war sie nicht lesbar.

Die Themen waren stark, Zunächst war es nicht einfach die verschiedenen Zeitebenen und Handlungsstränge nachzuvollziehen. Zum Ende wurde es klarer. Der Film berührt und es enstehen Fragen über die ich noch lange nachdenken were.Fazit empfehlenswert

Ce film est très prenant et, comme à l'habitude (Babel et Amours Chiennes) pour ce cinéaste, cette histoire de plusieurs destins qui s'entrechoquent vous tient en haleine. Je recommande d'ailleurs les 3 films.
