An Incredible Lens for Flowers
I bought this lens about a year ago. At first I didn't like how it coupled with the XPRO 1 since most of the photos were nothing special, it was slow, and the focus sometimes missed the subject. But after the update, its a whole different lens. Its quicker and more precise. The colors are saturated and amazing. I love the shots of flowers and plants and while I had toyed with the idea of selling the leans a few months ago, now I wouldn't dream of it. Its definitely a speciality lens and more limited than some of the others in the line up, but its a great lens if you like photographing flora. Its not a true macro in the scientific sense but you can get interesting macro shots with it.

Amazing image quality, but annoying in a few ways
First of all, I absolutely LOVE this lens for its image quality. The bokeh it produces is dreamy. The subject in focus is sharp with vivid details. Unfortunately, I can't say it's perfect (I won't bore you with too many details -- just google the lens and you will find far better reviews than a few lines on Amazon): -- it's not 1:1 macro. Bummer and I don't understand why it's so hard for Fuji to produce a true macro, since it's done by every other company out there. -- AF is slow and hunts sometimes. You really do need patience with macro, but esp. with this lens. -- I hate the retracting lens barrel (not sure what to call the 39mm filter size thing). It's SLOW and noisy, and since it's 39mm, setting it up with a Raynox macro filter is an adventure (you need a 39mm UV filter as "spacer" otherwise there is an error, and then you need to put on the Raynox adapter, and then finally the macro filter itself. Lots of work! If it were 1:1 I won't have to bother with all the Raynox complications. But I guess since I chose Fuji, I have only myself to blame.). Okay, so despite the three things, I am keeping this lens and really enjoy the results despite all the "hard work" involved to get what I want. On the other hand, it's a fabulous portrait lens too if you can't afford the 56mm.

Superb short-tele and close-up lens to add to a traveling Fuji camera kit
For years I've done close-up photography such as flowers, insects, etc. while traveling. I added this lens to my X-T1 kit for its compact size and light weight, which will work very nicely for traveling with a small camera bag. The focal length (90mm equivalent on full-frame) is ideal to maintain good subject distance and the 0.5 maximum magnification is about the top that can be hand-held with any reliability yet still get pretty close. Upon receipt, I took some test exposures using a resolution target “star-chart-bars-full-600dpi.png” downloaded and printed from the internet: five such targets in the frame, one in the center and one in each corner. I had the camera (on tripod) about 128" from the targets. Examining the camera JPGs, the results of this test were amazing. Even wide open at f/2.4 the image character in all four corners was the same as the center. No distortions or aberrations were visible. For each f-stop f/2.8, f/4, and so on, I noticed very slightly increasing detail up to f/8. The lens passed this quick informal test with flying colors. Separately I took a few exposures of microscope slides (with permanently mounted specimens) backlit on a slide sorter. This was to get an idea of the lens behavior at or near its maximum magnification. The results, closely cropped at 1:1 pixels, resemble micrographs, though limited in detail of course by the sensor resolution.

Not for focus-hungry power users. Good for patient photographers.
I was mildly impressed with this lens while I had it. I ultimately returned it due to focusing issues. Once it is in focus and locked in the image quality is great and the macro capabilities are decent enough for users of the Fuji X mount system - but keep in mind this focus is as slow as you've heard. Enough so that I thought I had a faulty lens. If you don't need lightning fast autofocus and just want a nice portrait/macro lens this will suit you fine. Not for the demanding user.

Solid lens. Slow Slow Focus (edit: focus speed fixed!)
(My last review of this lens discussed a lens that produces solid image quality marred with a slow auto and manual focus, however, the focus issues have been fixed by a firmware update.) Look and feel: this portrait angle lens is a relatively small low profile that fits well in proportion with the x-pro1 body. The lens hood is quite large and doubles its lens length. Lens and hood (!) is all metal in construction. Operation: The firmware released late September 2012 improved the function of the lens greatly bringing up the speed of manual and autofocus. Hunting can still occur when contrast focus misses, but those 10 seconds of hunting has been drastically cut down to what feels like ~3 seconds. Manual focus is fast and now quite usable. Usage of EVF is recommended as opposed to the usage of OVF for purpose of confirming focus on subjects. Recommended.

Don't be swayed by negative reviews on AF
Without any disrespect to reviewers both on Amazon and elsewhere who have commented on slow AF speeds, this has not been an issue at all either on my XM-1 or XE-1, where the lens has focused quickly and accurately even in relatively dim indoor lighting. I suspect that in some cases, owners have not set their camera controls for macro focusing, which when selected seems to have the same effect as a physical focus limiter switch on my DSLR lenses. This prevents the focus from hunting through the full range which clearly would be a maddening experience on any macro lens. A small, petite, tack sharp, fairly quiet lens in everyday operation. The only irritation is Fuji's ridiculous 39mm lens filter diameter and the tiny, difficult to attach, lens cap for a guy with big hands. But at the sale price, an absolute steal as a phenomenal portrait lens.

Sealed box. Made in Japan. 2022 import. Came with latest 3.13 firmware. 2+1 year warranty once registered. For a macro it is light weight. This and my 23mm f2 has almost same weight. Normal distance focus, very fast with xm5. Macro better to use manual override. I turned off prefocus so it make less noise. Photo quality excellent but that is expected from fuji. For Both portrait and macro it is excellent.

I've owned Canon and Nikon's best quality lenses in the past (worked as a professional photographer for 10 years, and a further 20 years as an enthusiast after I switched careers), and can confidently say that this is the sharpest lens I've ever used! I'm amazed, to be honest. It's small and light, it focusses reliably and accurately even indoors in dim tungsten light (camera and lens firmware: Jan 2014), albeit slowly if Macro is enabled, but that's understandable when you consider the range it has to seek through - not a problem for me at all! I've only owned it for about a week and haven't had a chance to do more than test shots, but I'm absolutely delighted and can't wait to get out and about with it. The 56mm f1.2 is a brand new and much anticipated alternative, and I thought long and hard about waiting and saving for that instead. But the 56mm costs almost three times as much, is larger and heavier, more difficult to use (at wide open), not nearly as versatile, not as sharp (according to MTF charts, but now that I've seen the results from the 60mm I expect it to be true!). I was worried about the reports of 'rubbish focussing', but I'm glad I took a chance and bought the 60mm. The focussing is fine, and I'm completely sure I made the right choice. If I could give this lens 6 stars I would! FOOTNOTE (11 Feb 2015): Nature took its course shortly after I'd written the review above, and my baby son became a very mobile toddler! And I found that, for moving subjects, Fuji's AF system is not really good enough to keep up, and the 60mm above, as much as I love it, is probably the slowest performer of all Fuji lenses. With much sadness I had to trade in all my Fuji kit for a DSLR with machine-gun focusing, and although I'm extremely happy with the new equipment, I really do miss the Fuji system, it's ethos and the character of the lenses - most of all the 60mm! It's the lens that made me get rid of all my Fuji kit, but it's also the lens that would make me buy it all back again in an instant if I had enough money! It's a great lens which produces *beautiful* images - razor sharp where required, with beautiful bokeh everywhere else, and great macro performance too. Bottom line: if you favour a careful and deliberate approach to photography, this is a no-brainer, MUST buy, best lens in your bag. Period. However.. if you need to take quick shots of moving subjects, then it's not ideal, sadly.

ポートレートマクロレンズとしてはすごく良い絵が撮れるので愛用している。 AF速度は皆が言うように遅いのが難点ではある。
