A Great DIY Workbench Vise
I purchased this vice as an addition to a simple workbench that I built and I'm very happy with the result. Installation wasn't so much difficult as time consuming, in part because I had to modify my bench to accommodate it. Thankfully, the design of this vise allows for several different mounting options. The other reason it took so long is because the directions offered little guidance. There was no recommendation on what kind of mounting hardware to use, and it provided no template for drilling the holes to accommodate the rods. As a result, I'm giving this four stars, instead of five. Please note, this is just the vice. No mounting hardware. No jaws. However, that's the way it has to be considering that the length of screws and the width of jaws will vary greatly depending on your particular bench. In my case, I used Number 14 flat wood screws as my mounting hardware, and splurged on a 2x6 piece oak to use as the jaws. I also used some of the oak to fashion the end pieces on my handle (1" hardwood doweling). Happy with how it turned out.ALSO … Regarding the handle. It's advantageous for the handle to slide back and forth. There will be times that you'll want to be able to slide it all the way to the end piece, just to get it out of your way. Trust me on this. You don't want the handle to fit snug. A 1-inch piece of doweling slides easily. I wouldn't recommend using a diameter any greater than that.** Photos show the vice before and after I applied stain and three coats of clear satin finish to the wood.

Impressive Front Vise
WOW! Really impressive Front Vise! I was surprised how stout the construction is. Can't wait to install it! I might have to beef up my bench to handle this thing - lol (any excuse is a good excuse)HANDLEThe opening for the handle is 1 1/16 in. Easy accepts a 1 in hardwood dowel and the handle end stops can be found at a local craft store.VISE STOPOne of the slide rods has a 5/32 in hole that is 5/32 in from the end of the rod. If you want to have a Stop to keep you from extending the head out of it's threading, a Hitch Pin fits nicely and does a great job. I used a 1/8 x 2 1/2 that I found locally at a hardware store. - See Pics -INSTALLI know some reviews complain about not having a template for installing, but it's pretty easy to figure it out and if neede make your own template by disassembling it and tracing your own.

Pretty good but not great
I have mixed impressions about this vise that only time using it will resolve one way or another. For its design it's straightforward to install, but with just a bit more forethought the manufacturer could have slotted the base holes for adjusting the undermount for a perfectly square fit, and allowed for the screw to be removed from the face for simpler installation of the wood jaw. There's also a little play in the guide rods that the vise rocks when not under load and racks when the load isn't center. It's just enough to trigger my OCD, but not so much that it has compelled me to junk it for a product twice the price.

BEAST of a vise, especially for the price.
I've had quite a few vises and "woodworking" vises, but this this is just a whole new animal. I've had a couple of end vises, moxon/twin screw vises, and a shoulder vise, but the 10" yost model is almost like a completely different class. I would not put the 10" model on a bench that isn't absolutely "stout" I had to retrofit my current bench for thickness (went from 1" to 2" thickness). I installed an 18" x 4" x 1.5" chop on this guy fully anticipating using spreader clamps to avoid racking. So far, this really hasn't been necessary. I was a devout shoulder vise advocate (used with a t-track and hold down clamp for edge work and at times, deadmen) primarily for dovetailing and other vertical work. I was hesitant to switch, but it doesn't even rack enough to justify reinstalling my shoulder vise. I chose this option to try to "get away with" a single vise, and haven't had a second thought. What drew me to this vise was the size and Yost's reputation (cost was just a bonus).Fit and finish is excellent. Threading is smooth as butter.Does not include handle. I don't turn, so I just went the hickory blank/draw knife/belt sander route. No problem. No instructions, but this is about as straightforward as it gets when it comes to vise installation. One final note: With the size of the screw, consequently, the thread size, it almost eliminates the need for a quick release mechanism. A professional woodworker may miss the extra couple seconds spent, but a professional woodworker is probably looking for a different class of vise altogether. Advances VERY quickly.

Heavy and beefy vise
Heavy and beefy vise. My application leaves the nut 4.5 inches from the jaw, I have a 1 inch Ipe jaw so end up with 9 inches max opening. There is no stop on my vise as reported by others, perhaps because this is a 10 inch or because it is newer. Best solution if needed would be to drill and tap the end of the screw, then a bolt and washer could be used to limit the opening. a 1 inch dowel fits loosely, 1 and 1/16 would fit better. Also a standard dowel gets marked up quickly. I made the endcaps (without a lathe) and glued them on. The inside of the handle opening is rough cast, so cleaning that out and using a larger dowel made out of harder material would be more satisfying feel. But it works as is so will just use it for a while and see how it goes. The instructions do not mention the two metal guide pieces. They do really help vertical racking but took a bit to get them located exactly right. There should be no resistance when sliding the bars in and out.I have been getting by for many years without a proper wood vise, I also have a Jawhorse which will do almost everything I need except some planing and using a drawknife. this vise should fill those functions nicely.Video : https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=UabfwkT3vus

Good quality worth the money.
Real sturdy vice. Simple enough to install even without a template. The opening is wide enough to clamp a 2x8 and work with it confidently. Had to make my own handle but a broken broom handle worked just fine.

Great Vise!
For about $50.00, one cannot beat the quality of this vise. I have installed it on a new bench I made this summer and found it to be everything and more that I require. I am very happy with the Yost 9" front vise and recommend it highly.
