Fresco Artist Viewpoint
Because Conte Crayons are made with many of the same pigments I use to paint with, they come closest to my finished frescos. Using them to make at least one color cartoon makes sense. Their small size allows lines fine enough for the fresco artist, but I do wish that they also came in a fat variety the size of sidewalk chalk. When filling in expansive areas they wear out quickly. Ordering individual Carres is a bit more expensive and troublesome. This set came amazingly unbroken except for the white Carre which a fresco artist seldom uses anyway. I have loved Contes ever since my college days when my teacher introduced them to me. I never went back to charcoal afterwards. While they do not blend as easily as charcoal, the large cartoons I draw are essentially preliminary drawings, a master plan towards the finished work, so I do not waste much time perfecting them. Often I throw these drawings out when the fresco is done, which makes my wife sad. A few, the ones which came out better than the fresco, I keep. I also keep the smaller sketches if there was some detail I think will help on my next fresco. I hope you enjoy Contes as much as I do.

They seem fine
I just started using these for the first time. They are basically hard pastels. Because people call them crayons I expected them to be waxier or creamier and not to create as much dust as they do. The colors don't seem super saturated. I'm used to using soft pastels (Rembrandt and Sennelier) which are more vibrant. I'm curious how they compare to Nupastels but haven't tried those. Maybe my opinion will change after taking a class that requires them. As of now, meh. Also, the box with foam inside is kind of crappy - I'll want to find another container if I plan to use them often. The foam is too flimsy to hold the sticks in place. Update: the plastic box is fine - the foam is a little thin and flimsy but it closes tightly and holds pastels more or less in place. The pastels are vibrant enough. I'm still getting used to them and using Canson paper for value exercises for class but think they would be more satisfying on sanded paper.

Historical Excellence!
Essentially, a very hard pastel. The French have been making these pastel crayons for over a century. Beautiful pigments and easy to work with. Great tools to add to your quiver of pastel paints!

Great drawing tool
Nice selection of colors. Don't forget to break them to desirable lengths to draw with the sides. Hope to make more use of color in time.
