OAL Gauge Straight C1000

Seating depth is a critical measurement in precision reloading and this tool makes it possible to accurately measure as each bullet type touches the rifling lands providing a true overall cartridge length measurement. It also enables precise measurements to determine and monitor barrel throat wear as the barrel ages with use. I have found that it takes some practice to seat the bullet against the lands accurately so consistent measurements to a thousands of an inch are achieved. I take the average of three groups of 10 measurements to determine the OAL measurement. I use this tool in conjunction with a bore scope so as I push the bullet into the throat, I can monitor exactly when the bullet touches the lands but I have discovered that after the bullet touches the lands, it’s not possible to push it forward any further with normal hand pressure, so the bore scope is not actually beneficial. I wanted to take my shooting to the next level of accuracy so I bought the Hornady comparator tools (base, anvil & inserts) to measure from the case datum line & bullet ogive. These tools are well made, easy to use and very accurate. Precision shooting is all about eliminating variables and these tools do just that by providing a way to measure more accurately. In the past, tools of this nature were very expensive but Hornady has found a way to provide these tools at a great price so more shooters can enjoy the benefits. If you want to play at the next level, these tools are essential.

For years I've been using Hornady's bent version that inserts through an AR's ejection port , and love it. The bent one can also be used for bolt rifles, but since I'm now getting more into bolt guns, I decided to also get this one, thinking it would be easier to use. I first thought this straight one is not as repeatable in the way it locks the moving inner rod to the fixed outer rod, so that you get reliable readings of OAL or BTO. With the bent unit, I've been able to get repeated measurements (same mod case, same bullet, same chamber) in a .001"-.0015" range, but this one SEEMED to have almost 1/16" of free play. But then I noticed the tiny black socket set screw in front of the brass knob. Once I snugged that one down, the free play disappeared! (If I'd bothered to read the instructions...) And yes, with this straight gauge it is easier to press both the outer and inner shafts forward so both the shoulder and bullet are in firm contact, WHILE gently snugging down the locknut. This one's repeatability is at least as good, and it's definitely easier to use!

Yes, it's better than just sticking a bullet and case with a loose fitting neck size and closing the bolt down! You need this if you want to know the length your cartridge needs to be to be right on the lands. Then you can decide with load work-ups how far to go back or even jammed into the lands. This is of course not a tool for fools who don't know what they are doing. Also, be aware that you will need to have the accessory caliper fittings for the bullet ogive measure (or the abilty to craft one on a lathe and mill like I did) if you want an accurate measurement, as this allows one to measure from a more consistent spot on the bullet and eliminates bullet tip deformation errors. This allow the measure to be set and kept secure while manipulating out of the rifle, thus giving one the confidence that it hasn't moved before a measurement is taken. The old put a slide fit bullet into a case and stick it in and close the bolt down does do the same thing, but is VERY hard to tell for sure if something didn't move.

I recommend that you buy this device, but READ EVERY WORD OF THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL. They did a nice job writing it (maybe Stoney Point wrote it before this was bought by Hornady?), and it is more useful than any video on YouTube that I've found. First of all, do not buy the curved model. Contrary to what Hornady customer support will tell you, the curved model is useless. The cable (which makes it possible to have a curved model) blocks your calipers from getting a proper measurement on the case. Second, the straight model also doesn't allow my calipers to line up properly in line with the case, so I know my measurements are at least a few thousandths off. Folks may read this and say that I have the comparator tool positioned the wrong way on my calipers. Either way I try it, and with any of the 3 pairs of calipers I own (2 of them have Hornady's name on the side), the calipers to do not line up fully parallel to the modified case with bullet inserted. That being said, this still gives me a better starting point than any other method on semi-auto rifles. Since it's only off by a few thousandths, and I don't load any bullets closer to the lands than about 20 thousandths, my starting loads always chamber safely. Hopefully, you'll use this tool (and bullet comparator) in combination with the headspace gauge so that your seating depth measurements are based on the distance from shoulder to the bullet ogive (for cases that headspace on the shoulder, which is almost every case people are loading these days) in order to account for difference between the modified case and the cases you are actually loading. I actually sent a case off to Hornady to have a custom modified case made. It was returned faster than expected.

Works as it should good price

This works great with the other required components. Go watch some Youtube vids if you're not sure. I ended up getting this straight version since the curved one wont work with the 300 blackout case unless you are only loading 110g bullets. Manufacturer must have screwed that up. I have it all down now and it really helps with reloading for your particular rifle. Many times the ogive vs the OAL of your round can be greatly improved on from what reloading manuals say. We are talking 1000ths of an inch and mils here, but the point of this tool is to prevent bullet jump through the lands of the barrel, and that it will do. Improving accuracy and feeding in some cases with the 300blk.

I purchased this handy item a month or so ago and at first was frustrated because I kept getting different readings some by as much as 70 thousands .070. I searched for reviews and came up with many conflicting ideas. I solved my problem buy first taking the plastic measuring rod out and making sure it was vertical I lightly sanded the tip that meets the bullet to be sure it was even and square relative to the rod and bullet. then I eliminated the tendency of the rod to hang up NOT by sanding but by taking a non scratch pad for washing dishes and running it up and down the length of the rod a few times this smoothed out the rough spots on the rod that tended to snag when measuring. I washed the rod with hot water and Dawn soap then dried it thoroughly before reinserting it in the gauge. After doing this I was able to get consistent multiple reading that were within one to two thousands of an inch time after time. At first I tried fine powdered graphite and light oil but do not recommend it as the rod picks it up and deposits it on the gun landings causing inaccurate readings. With a little practice this can be a useful tool for finding the correct seating depth for your bullets. I currently have five different bullets from 87 grain up to 105 grain that I use in my rifle and using this gauge am able to develop an accurate load for each bullet.
