80's Sci-Fi Classic - The First To Use CGI.
I first watched this film on its original release in 1984. The special effects were great for the time, but do look rather dated now. However it's a great, fun sci fi story with a super cast. Lance Guest is great as Alex, Dan o herily is very humerous as Grig, but Robert Preston is absolutely outstanding as Centauri and steals every scene he's in.It's a shame they never made a sequel as this really is a fun film. It's reminds me very much of the later films Galaxy Quest and Tremors . Sci Fi with a healthy dose of humour thrown in.As previously stated this American 25th anniversary blu ray edition plays fine on my U.K player even though it's not described as region free.It arrived within a week and at a great price. Well worth buying if you like the genre.

Groundbreaking
I remember watching this on VHS - it must have been around 1985 / 86 and I absolutely loved it.Revisiting it on Bluray was a real treat after re-aquainting myself with the film on lovefilm. If you're not familiar with the story it's about a young guy, Alex Rogan, who is trapped by circumstance working as the maintenance man on the trailer park his mum manages. The one outlet he has away from the drudgery of his life is a video game outside the convenience store which he eventually beats prompting the arrival of "Centauri" who convinces Alex to come along with him and be a real life star fighter. When Alex realises the enormity of the situation he asks to be taken back home, at which point the starfighter base is attacked and nearly destroyed completely. After being hunted down on earth by an alien hit-man Alex is convinced by Centauri to return to Starfighter command and pilot the one remaining Gunstar and defeat the Ko-Dan empire. At it's heart the film is really about seizing opportunities. As Otis says in the film about grabbing on with both hands and holding on tight. It's also a coming of age story about accepting responsibility for your life and having the courage to make it what you want. It may seem a bit sentimental but in the conext of this film it works really well and I found it's message sincere. The film was a pioneer in the use of early computer graphics for the special FX and at the time was truly ground breaking. Some of the effects look dated today but I have to say the Gunstar still looks awesome! The dated effects only add to the overall charm, much like watching the original Tron. In fact it's amazing comparing those 2 films. With Starfighter coming just 2 years after Tron the improvement in the effects was astounding. The film was made a time when video gaming was nowhere near as popular (or sophisticated) as it is today but it's a perfect product of its time. Remember also that It was up against sc-fi films with bigger production budgets and Star Wars was reaching it's climax with Jedi but this film does offer something genuinely different to those films.Picture quality is decent (remember it's 30 years old!) - It's the best looking version you will see for the home versions without doubt. Sound is also excellent with a lossless HD track. The music is also really good! For a UK buyer be aware that the bluray works fine but the DVD is region 1 and the digital copy won't download because that's also only for American buyers.Brings back very fond memories of carefree Saturday afternoons watching films!

tacky, corny, totally predictable plot, but just ACE !
From the days when ATARI asteroids was the ultimate in gaming, a gaming cross sci fi movie. It feels dated and the CGI looks laughable these days. It might have been cutting edge once, but that was a long time back. However, just like theatre, you are asked to believe the scenery with just a few clues, and you happily accept the deal. The story is lovely and has no unpleasantness to it.A film you come away from happy.

Nostalgic 80s movie at it's best
Loved watching this as a kid and still very watchable today.Obviously doesn't hold up to today's CGI but then at times that isn't all its cracked up to be.Take a walk down 80s memory lane, it will definitely put a smile on your face.

Good, fun movie
Really enjoyable movie with a good, solid story. Good for the family as it doesn't have anything unsuitable. Great early special effects and not too long a playtime.A reminder of how a good story is the basis of a great movie.

A must for the lover of 70s and 80s sci-fi.
One of the truly great early sci-fi adventures out there. If you liked the original TRON then you are bound to enjoy this film too, because they both make use of high-end computer generated imagery. The plot of the story is fun and imaginative. It's PG-rated and certainly a good family film if you're looking for something to watch over the holiday season. This was an US Import and I sadly have to add that the estimated delivery date fell short of the actual date, so be aware when buying imported films to allow for extra delivery time. All the same, I have the film now: It's a 25th Anniversary edition on Blu-ray disc and well-worth the price paid for it, for which I sincerely thank the buyer. It's one of my sci-fi favourites. Might it be yours too?
