I'm hearing bass that I never knew existed
I bought these speakers in part because I produce electronic music but mainly because I wanted a more accurate sound system in my living room with a better low frequency response than my old hi-fi stereo, and hey, if you spend even an hour a day listening to bassy music then you're just not enjoying yourself as much as you could be by investing in a pair of monitor speakers. Yes they are expensive. Yes this is the price PER speaker. Yes it so worth it. I'm sure the Rokits would probably be 90% as good as these and a whole lot cheaper, but what can I say, I'm a tool.Compared to my old setup, I'm noticing a lot of subtle elements that I'd never noticed before in many of my old tracks, even ones which I've heard thirty or forty times. This is particularly true of (older) dubstep and other bass-heavy electronic music, most obviously because these speakers are able to produce virtually the entire audible spectrum with virtually flat relative volume right down to 30Hz, meaning I'm able to hear and feel bass frequencies that I had no idea were even there before. They do cause my floor and walls to reverberate somewhat - living in a terraced house I'm a bit concerned that the neighbours might come and kick my door down if I'm not conservative with the volume (these can be EXTREMELY loud). I sometimes notice sounds and instruments which had always been there on my old hi-fi speakers, but weren't quite obvious enough that I'd noticed them before.I used to use a pair of DJ headphones for mixing - the speakers have shown me that I was wasting a lot of headroom with previously inaudible bass frequencies and consequently my tracks were sounding quieter than they needed to. I'm sure I have much to learn still - the speakers aren't going to make you into a god-like producer but it certainly helps to hear the low frequency content.I think they look really good - the yellow cones are eye-catching and they seem to be very well built. The photographs on the internet didn't really prepare me for just how big and heavy these are, which is almost certainly a good thing in terms of sound quality. I really like how the KRK logo lights up when the speakers are on, it looks awesome in the dark and the automatic turn-off after 20 minutes is a good feature for saving power given that these are class-AB amplifiers and probably consume a reasonable amount in quiescence. The only thing that I don't like about them is that they are quite susceptible to interference from mobile phone signals, if you place one within about five feet then the interference can be very obvious - I'll probably have to open the speakers up and put some shielding on the cables, which isn't the worse thing in the world but it would have been nice for them to have come shielded, especially at this price.Overall however, these are the most badass speakers I've ever heard or seen, and I feel like I'll be enjoying this lush bass for a very long time to come - very highly recommended!
