Pictures and fonts do not expand making the book difficult to view and read
I am a great fan of Paul Goble's works, both the artistry and the prose . Having several print editions of his books, I decided to try one on Kindle . This rating has nothing to do with the book or the story but only with the presentation on Kindle . And that presentation is very poor .I tried the book on both an Android based tablet and an iPad and experienced the same difficulties . The pictures will not expand . The opening of the book claims they will but they do not . Small pictures and the detail is lost . In addition, the font is not expandable or enlargeable . There was no font button on the iPad version at all and when trying to use two fingers to expand a segment all that was returned was a garbled black line in a text box .Don't buy this as a Kindle book unless you have super vision or intend to use a magnifying glass to read it .

Great informative book for kids!
This was bought as a birthday present for one of my sons. He LOVES this book! He has checked it out from our local library many many times, so I was pleased that I found a hardback copy of it here on Amazon. He was a very happy boy on his birthday!

Nobody Tells It Better
To the Plains Indians horses were almost as precious as life itself. It was horses that allowed them to follow and hunt buffalo, a primary food source; horses that moved the camps; horses that determined stature in society. If you were male, then the number of horses that you owned proved your bravery & daring. If you were female, then the number of horses paid for you as a bride price determined your desirability. Many of the traditional tales of the Plains tribes involve horses and Paul Goble has put several of them into book format - notably The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses and Horse Raid: The Making of a Warrior , a republication of Goble's beloved 1973 Lone Bull's Horse Raid.In the story 14-year old Lone Bull, tired of being a child, wants to go on a horse raid with the warriors, but his father and the women in his family think he is too young. Grandfather, however, understands and helps Lone Bull and his best friend Charging Bear sneak out of camp to follow the warriors. The book also features information about the history of horse raiding. Horse Raid: The Making of a Warrior is suitable for children Grade 4 and up as a "read together" story or one to be used as part of a learning unit. Older children will enjoy reading the book on their own.Author Paul Goble is long-renowned among those who put authentic tribal tales into written words and pictures, both for his accuracy to the original tale and for his highly unique artwork. Horse Raid: The Making of a Warrior belongs in every library and collection of children's literature.Grandma's $0.02 - Lone Bull's Horse Raid was a favorite with my children when they were young. I'm delighted to see this new version.Highly recommended

Perfect for all ages
Some picture books are just so beautiful they’re hard to put down. Paul Goble’s Horse Raid falls into this category. The story, though told to young readers, is by no means simple. It’s a well-researched depiction of life in the Plains, when buffalo still ran wild, and horses were the measure of a man. The youthful protagonist wants to prove himself a man, and his grandfather helps him sneak out after his father’s raiding party. But father knows more than he lets on, and older readers will quickly see how plans have come together to give this boy his chance at adulthood.Responsibility, respect, and recognition of cultural mores underpin this tale. Neither war nor theft are glorified, but a world is brought to life, and the reader, young or old, is given a chance to share something of that world’s experience. Beautiful pictures adorn the pages, darkness bringing the secrecy of night, horses flying like the wind, riders wearing their eagle feathers, inviting questions to work out what they mean. Fighting, feeling, mourning and rejoicing, all are gorgeously depicted on pages filled with intricate details, complex pattern, and deceptive simplicity.Horse Raid is quite simply a gorgeous book—a well told tale, beautifully illustrated, honest, evocative, captivating, and true.Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher and I offer my honest review.
