The Timber-frame Home: Design, Construction and Finishing

I am researching a (possible) future project and am trying to gather information on sustainable building and living from many different sources.The practicality and green credentials of timber construction is hard to beat. When you couple this with the natural beauty of timber and the creative imagination of designers using this material it becomes my preferred choice.Written by an experienced American designer and builder, this book is filled with information, drawings and photographs to satisfy the most demanding reader.I have, so far, had a quick read through but look forward to a more leisurely and detailed read over the Christmas holidays.Heaven is - a first-class book, a glass of Merlot and a roaring log fire.If you can't have all three - get the book - you will not be disappointed.There are many books on this subject - try this one first.

This is the second book I have bought authored by Tedd Benson, and it is a refreshing insight into both some possibilities, and the more prosaic stuff, like figuring how to run electrical cables. It still lacks (for me) decisions such as 'which design should I use to achieve a particular roof requirement?', and I suppose Tedd considers that a little too basic for his book. That will not dissuade me, I still love this book.

Amazing book. Tells you absolutely everything to consider if thinking of building a timber framed house. Lovely photographs and simple wording. Nice size too. Good for beginners and enthusiasts.

Amazing insight into how to build a timber framed home. Would recommend to anyone building by themselves or a builder too.

Beautiful pictures, highly informative without being laboriously detailed. I really enjoyed reading about the history, design of timber frame houses.

I have read this book through. It covers the various concepts one needs to address, when designing a timber-frame home. This includes the foundation, the timber-frame design, the home design, the electrical and the plumbing. The book does not go into detailed design – no formulas and no design procedure. If one is interested in going the next step (detailed design), I would recommend the author’s book “Building The Timber Frame House”, in which the calculations are shown.
