Hands Free - Clean as Can Be
I can’t believe my life has come to this, but I am writing a review abut diaper pails. But, I feel that my gained knowledge about #2s is worthy of being passed on, and although it might sound a little silly, I have become strangely enamored with my diaper pail, the Dekor. We have 5 kids, and over the years, I’ve changed a lot of diapers. The first diaper pail we got years ago was a diaper genie, and I was never a fan. My biggest complaint was that after you had changed the diaper, you had to push said stinky, gross, and sometimes - otherworldly large diaper thru a small hole on the genie… squishing it to fit into a small hole would often cause, let’s call it “spillage”, that would get poop on your hand, on the pail, and generally places where you don’t want poop. Remember, you are doing this while holding your bundle of everlasting joy in one arm while reaching down to stuff the otherworldly large diaper into an unfathomably small hole. Not an easy task. And then, we discovered the Dekor. It rocks. Why? It’s HANDS FREE. Game changer. It has a foot pedal that opens the pail, then you simply drop the diaper thru the trap door. That’s it! Let me tell you, when it’s 3 a.m., and you are a zombie from lack of sleep, you need this process to be as simple as possible. I shudder to think the number of diapers that I have changed over the years, but this diaper pail makes it a lot easier than it was with the Genie. There is another pail that we looked at, the Ubbi, that cost quite a bit more and is made of metal. I looked at in in the store, and it also requires bending over, and sliding a door open, inserting a diaper, and then sliding it closed when finished. Kind of a pain to do every time you change a diaper. It is made of metal, so it shouldn’t absorb odors like the diaper genie did, but the Dekor is made of ABS that doesn’t absorb odors either, so I don’t see the big deal. Another think about the metal pails. In my research (isn’t it a bit sad that I’ve done research? – We really need to get out more), the manufacturer says to clean with a dry cloth. No cleaning products or even water. Ok, that is just gross. With Dekor, clean with whatever household cleaner you want, let’s kill any germs that are hanging around. Bags. Different pails have different systems. Some use household kitchen bags, some use cartridges of bags. Dekor comes with a loaded refill, and in my opinion, that is the way to go. You use what you need, and then switch out the bag. We tried using a kitchen bag instead of the refill in the Dekor, and it was ok, but honestly, we preferred the refill. It’s always there and ready to go, you only use what you need, and in the long run I bet it costs about the same. Stink. Stank. Stunk. – (Prepare for more wisdom). Poop stinks. Shocking isn’t it? There's a reason every diaper pail that's been around more than a couple months has a bunch of 1 star reviews. Go look at all the other product. Notice they're all about 3.5 or 4 stars. Then click on the 1 star link for each of them and you'll see what I mean. You'll see dozens of people talk about how each product is terrible and every pail sticks to high heaven. Mostly that's because people have unrealistic expectations that buying a diaper pail means you never have to smell poopy diapers. This is compounded by the fact that the poop only starts to smell once your bundle of everlasting joy begins eating solids. So when you first bring the baby home you think everything is great and the pail is working perfectly and then all of the sudden the pail is terrible and horrible and is broken... Well it's not broken, your baby's poop just didn't used to stink and now it does. Here's the truth, no matter which on you buy, you're gonna smell poop. whether it's when you open the lid or remove the bag, they all allow a little stank to escape. Dekor is no different, it just allows less than the others. Sometimes we go a few days between changing the bag, sometimes we switch it out quicker due to one of those otherworldly poops. The box for the Dekor says it can hold 60 diapers. We might have gone close to that with some newborn diapers, but once the poop got serious, we never waited that long. Reading back over this, I can’t believe I just wrote a manifesto on diaper pails. But, I thought I would share some of the knowledge I have gained over thousands of diapers. I just think the Dekor works. It’s the easiest to use of all the diaper pails by far, and handles the smell. I highly recommend it.

One of the best cat things I've ever bought
This thing makes cleaning the litter boxes not the worst thing in my life! I used to have a litter genie, and I hated that thing. So much so that I switched completely to a flushable litter. I liked it, but then we moved in with new roommates who used regular litter, and it quickly became clear that my cat preferred the regular litter over the flushable kind. So, I headed to Amazon to see if there was a better alternative to the litter genie, and lo and behold! Everything that was wrong about the litter genie is right about about the Dekor plus. You scoop the poop, use your foot to open the lid, and move the scooper (the iPrimio non-stick scooper [pictured] - also a great purchase - fits perfectly) through the trap door to deposit the load. Done. There are 3 cats in the house and I empty the Dekor Plus every 3-4 weeks, maybe? It's such a non-traumatic experience that I can't even recall the last time I did it. The method of removing the full bag is so simple in comparison to the ridiculous maneuver you have to pull with the litter genie, it brings a tear to my eye. Press button, open door, pull out full part, cut, tie, pat yourself on the back for buying such a superior product. Also, I bought this several months ago and I'm still using the bag roll that it came with! It controls the odor super well too. I catch a bad wiff every once in a while if I drop a large load through the trap door, but otherwise, nothing. The bag is very heavy to dispose of when full of clay litter. That's no fault of the Dekor, but might be an issue for some. You could empty it more frequently, but I started mixing the newer lightweight litter about 50/50 with the regular stuff. The cats won't use the lightweight stuff alone, but seem to actually prefer the mix over the straight regular stuff, and it makes taking out the full bag doable for me. Also, it looks pretty nice for a poop container. The Dekor Plus makes it super easy to scoop the litter box every day, so if you aren't currently scooping the box daily, or you are but it's crushing your soul, you should just get this, because we all deserve a clean place to poop and an easy way to keep it that way!

Dekor Hands Down!
We currently have a Diaper genie in our child’s nursery, but we set up a changing station downstairs for when our 2nd LO arrived. At first we just tossed the diapers in the trash, which filled our trash cans too quickly and smelled the place up! I didn’t want to move the diaper genie because we still change diapers there as well and the lid has since broken. When going to buy a second one I stumbled upon the Dekor Diaper pail. The reviews were pretty good and this one would be more visible so I decided to buy it. Using and having both, I can confidently say that the Dekor Diaper pail is the way to go!! I’m so disappointed that I didn’t know about it when we got our diaper genie. Here’s what I love about it: -Dekor holds the scent much better than the DG (this could also be that the Dekor is new and the DG is a year old, so we’ll see if that changes.) -Its so much easier and faster to empty the Dekor and the built in bag cutter is a gem I didn’t know I needed. As I said we have the DG in the nursery and I Hate that I keep a pair of scissors (child safety kind but still) in that room just so I can cut the bag every time it needs emptied. The Dekor has a blade built in and it’s Inside the door so I never have to worry about the littles getting into it. -The Dekor holds more. I only use the DG mainly for night changes now, and I’m finding I still empty the bag twice as often as the Dekor. -I don’t have to shove my hand into Dekor to push down a couple diapers to make room. GROSS. My biggest peeve with the DG is when you’re only a few diapers in, you have to start holding the pedal halfway to get your arm all the way in there to shove those suckers down. Think gloves you use for cow bums but the craps IN the glove where you put your hand. Nasty! Granted when the Dekor starts to get pretty full you may have to push down a bit to squeeze in those last few diapers, but the open design does not make my hand smell like fermented baby butt frosting, so I’ll take it. -Lastly I love that the Dekor will be able to be used as a trash can after diapers. Having a dual function just makes it that more efficient and I can’t argue with that. If you’re torn, my vote clearly goes to the Dekor and not the dirty cow glove the Diaper Genie turns out to be! Happy changing! ***UPDATE*** 2/2022- purchased 12/20 So id you see the dates, clearly we’ve had our Dekor for a bit. I wish I could give this more stars! Two of constant use between 2 growing boys and a 3rd baby on the way, and it still operates like new! It also has helped significantly against odors compared to the Genie as well as bags. I don’t buy bags or change bags as often as I did with the genie. So I’m happy to say, still VERY happy with this purchase!!

Review by a dad
TL;DR: Buy this, not the Diaper Genie. Hello fellow Amazon shopper. Dad here. It is 5 am and my now-toddler is terrorizing the living room while Mom catches an extra hour of sleep, and as I was changing my something-hundredth diaper this morning I was like, "I really like this diaper pail," which would have been such a weird thing for my 20-something self to think but is now totally normal for all of us who spend our days in the company of small humans. I also thought how it was a bit of a crap-shoot (haha first dad joke of the day) when I bought it because… it seems there is a trend in the baby-item-review-space where gushing pregnant moms who just opened their baby shower gifts come online and write about how “cute” something is, or about how they “can’t wait to use” it. You should always be suspicious of a review claiming to be written by a mom of little kids. If they really do have little kids, they probably don’t have time to write Amazon reviews. If you know a mom, you know this. So here I am, in my late 30's, 15 months into kid number 3 and veteran of many diaper pails, writing you a review of why this pail is a great choice. 1. The price. It’s $50 bucks. You don’t have to use the special bags. I like them because they are easy to use, but you can put a regular white kitchen bag in this thing. If you do use the bags (I do), those are about $30 for the 4-pack and last us for months. I’m only on my second 4-count order still and my kid is almost a year and a half old. So far that’s a $110 outlay for the whole shebang. Run the numbers on a Diaper Genie or that silly metal Ubbi pail plus their refills. I think this is a deal. 2. The function. You want a foot-operated lid. What do you think your hands are doing mid-diaper change? Assuming you are having a good day and they are not covered in fecal matter or urine, you’re still using them to keep the kid on the table and their hands, feet and onesie under some semblance of control. Foot operation = win. Also: many diaper pails (Diaper Genie is one) require you to squish the diaper thru a little opening. This is stupid. A diaper is a sponge. What happens when you squeeze a sponge? On this one, once you raise the foot-operated lid, it’s just a super light (and big) spring door (which is there for odor control). Just pop it in. 3. Odor control. It works great. We have it in our bedroom and only change it when it gets full. No issues. Now, having said that… we stopped putting #2 diapers in here when the kid started solids. Solid food = stinky diapers. But, they only “go” 1-2 times a day at that point, so it’s an easy matter to chuck those in a plastic grocery bag, tie it off, and send it straight to the outside trash. 4. Design. My wife likes it. Therefore I am happy. Hope this helps. Happy parenting!

Okay diaper pail…
Edit: So after a few weeks of use I would not recommend this pail as a top choice. I feel like I’d prefer less capacity for a better odor catcher. It just really stinks. I’ve tried to add some smell absorbers and scent packs and it doesn’t mask much. Also, it’s very flimsy. Compared to the munchkin pail I had, I think I might end up going back. The only thing that prevents me pulling the trigger is that this is pricey and I have a year worth of bags. I might just use this for our newborn (they don’t have a terribly smell for a bit) and use the munchkin for our year old. — Works well so far. We have a 1 year old and a newborn on the way. I bought this for its capacity after our Munchkin pail broke. This can is definitely less substantial than the Munchkin pail (mostly plastic where the munchkin is metal and a good weight). It is a bit wider as well. I’m not a fan of the placement of the bag cutter, but that’s not a deal breaker. It does have a lock, which is nice. I got the year supply with the pail, so I think that is a really nice benefit. It doesn’t have any mechanical twisting bits, which I appreciate since that’s what broke on our other diaper pail. That being said, you get a nice whiff of feces every time you drop it in. Not a huge issue unless you have a curious toddler that likes to push the trap door 😂. The nice thing is the can does have a locking mechanism that is super easy to use one handed. Overall I’m happy with the can, though I wish it was a more substantial weight.

Best diaper pail after years of use and testing various brands
Yes, reviewing a diaper pail is less than glamorous, but wanted to share a review after years of use and testing several brands. This Dekor Plus is by far the house favorite. We have now purchased another Dekor Plus to add to the newest’s arrivals room and wouldn’t think twice about another brand at this point. Overall, no diaper pail is perfect, they all have their cons, but this is the best diaper pail as far as upfront cost and from a refill budget perspective, as well as design and ease of use. For the most part, (we do use Poo-Pourri spray in our pails) it keeps the stinkiest of stinks in (unless someone forgets to tie the bag or close the door or leaves the flap open a little too long when dropping another diaper in) but it doesn’t require a stealth maneuver to get those nasty diapers into a tiny pail opening. The opening is large enough to just drop the mess in and can be used for regular trash once your kiddo ditches the diapers, so that’s another great plus to this pail. Refills are good (brand and off brand options), it can also take regular trash bags (if you can get scented trash bags, it’s equal to any refills as far as odors go) and works well if you forget to order refills in time. It’s easy to empty (internal bag cutter is nice too) and the step to open function is great. The internal flap lock is alright, for the little ones who can’t figure out how to use it yet (first kiddo figured it out pretty quick tho) but it really just gets in the way of one handed use, so we keep our flap unlocked anyway. (Did install a safety lock on the outside of one of the pails to prevent unwanted use). The pail is shorter than some (like compared to the munchkin step, which is much taller) but is wider, and again has a larger opening. Overall it holds around the same amount and requires a similar changeout schedule. It comes in several color options and seems to keep up with everyday use for years. If your looking for a diaper pail and want something easy and budget friendly, this is definitely a strong contender to consider.

Better than diaper genie IMO
Large capacity, has a lid lock, we can go about a week before changing the bag, the bag refill lasts about 3 months. Super easy to change the bag refill and to change the bag. I have also used a regular garbage bag when we ran out of bags and that worked well also. Bags are thick, and the diaper pail does a very good job of containing smell.

Great odor sealer. I keep forgetting to empty it.
This diaper pail is amazing at preventing odors from leaking and seals them inside. In fact, it works so great at sealing odors that I keep forgetting to empty it until it is full to the brim. As first time new parent, I was throwing the diapers in a trash bin 🗑️ but the odor build up was horrendous. While searching for a solution, I found out about this product. Some tips for new parents: 1. Leave the diaper pail outdoors with bottom and top doors open to air out. I stick something on top opening to keep it open while it airs out. This will help keep the pail odor free. 2. Do wipe down and sanitize it regularly to keep it clean and smelling fresh. 3. You can use regular kitchen trash bags in a pinch, but the bag filler is 100 times more convenient and easier to empty out. You can get the generic bags, no need to pay extra for expensive brand names. 4. Pay the extra and get the larger size diaper pail. It will accommodate more diapers, takes longer to fill up and less emptying. 5. There will be some odor when emptying out as you open the bottom door. There is no avoiding it as the trapped odor leaks out. I just hold my breath, quickly cut the bag, tie the bags, and throw it in garbage bin outside. Not a big deal. Other reviewers complaining about odors, I don't know what they are talking about. Either their pail is defective, not using it correctly, or not maintaing it clean by airing it out, wiping down and sanitizing regularly.
