Titanic Ship Magnificent Slipcase: Volumes One and Two

Binding issues have FINALLY been resolved
If the most in-depth 'Titanic' technical reference in your collection is Tom McCluskie's "Anatomy of the Titanic," or a reprint of the famous Shipbuilder special, you really owe yourself an upgrade. "Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" is, without doubt, the most detailed examination of the physical attributes of the ship currently available. They're the most in-depth look at any single ship I've ever owned, going far beyond even the best volumes in the "Anatomy of the Ship" series. While Volume 1 covers the structural, technical, and mechanical aspects of the ship, Volume 2 presents an extensive "guided tour" of the ship, focusing on the main passenger and crew areas. I personally enjoy volume 1 more, although anyone not seriously interested in bitumastic coatings, shell plating, and Kilroy's stoking indicators will find it an intimidating read. More than 1,600 photographs, technical diagrams, and period advertisements are spread across 37 chapters. The level of detail is absolutely incredible; you'll find diagrams of each watertight bulkhead, the dimensions of every railing and sidelight, a list of every piece of galley and pantry equipment onboard, dimensioned drawings of each type of window, detailed explanations of how the electric plant and ventilation systems worked, and so on, to almost mind-boggling level. The chapter on propelling machinery alone is 67 pages long and has 118 illustrations, and even details ladders and gratings in the engine room.I purchased both volumes of the original editions back in 2009 but eventually sold them a couple years ago. Remembering how much I loved both books, I bit the bullet again recently. Compared with the 2008 edition, not much has changed. Both volumes feature some minor tweaks to the diagrams, a few typo corrections, an expanded bibliography, and a key to the general arrangement plans. This isn't a deal breaker in any sense since the originals were pretty close to being masterpieces anyway. Volume one now includes an eight-page color section featuring some "Olympic" artifacts and diagrams of Olympic's side discharges and the Welin davit gear. Volume two's color section has been expanded to 16 pages and includes more White Star Line artifacts, postcards, and renderings of interior spaces.Although the contents are essentially the same, the main area of improvement is the quality of the binding. The original editions suffered from excessively tight bindings that couldn't handle the weight of the books. My copy of volume one tended to creak and groan like a sailing ship in a storm, while volume two split its binding after only gentle use. I'm happy to say this edition is holding up much better to repeated use, and doesn't seem inclined to split at the first sideways glance. The slipcase is fairly sturdy but perhaps a little too tight; the dust jackets are already starting to show some wear from being repeatedly removed from the case."Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" isn't cheap, but if you're a serious "Titanic" buff or have a stronger than usual interest in the technical aspects of the great liners, it's worth the current going price. It's also a surprisingly effective primer on early 20th century merchant shipbuilding, with plain language explanations of difficult concepts backed up by a 40-page glossary. These are the kind of books that serious "Titanic" buffs could get lost in for hours and still only skim the surface of.

AMAZING BOOKS AND SELLER!!!
I bought these books from Tome Dealers a few days ago and got them in the mail today brand new and in perfect condition, It's almost a shame to both open and read these books because that is how great the condition is, The seller did a great job at replying to any of my messages and was very kind, I highly recommend buying from them, I would also like to add that these books are just perfect and amazing in every way shape and forum If you are a Titanic fan and want to know everything about the ins and outs of the Titanic herself these are the books to buy, they will give you all the information you will ever need when it comes to the ships design both in and out, And also if you have ever wanted to build an extremely detailed model of the Titanic, these books will give you everything you need and want to know about building your very own Titanic Model.

How can I give these books 100 Stars!!!
The level of detailed information in these books is staggering! I'm still reading book one and am mesmerized by the book like none before it. I purchased the books to help me updating the Trumpeter 1/200th Titanic model kit to be as close as possible to what the real Titanic looked like. The huge number of photographs I've never previously seen of both the Titanic and her sister Olympic are astounding. The detailed images of the original drawings floors me. I'm an engineer - and seeing these prints makes me wonder if she wasn't unsinkable (nearly!). I've peeked ahead to book two and I'm completely wowed by what awaits me there.Re the books themselves: they're well made and will doubtless pass the test of time. The paper is not a thin low grade paper but instead is a strong page that can withstand many page turns for years to come. It feels "right". The hard covers are strong, thicker than a novel, and I can't imagine them warping over time. The dustjackets are also a strong thickness and folded precisely so the spines look perfect in the slip case. The slip case is a very tight fit around the books - no negative there.Shipping was much faster than I thought it would be. The shrink wrapped set was put in an oversized box filled with bubble wrap. The box looked like it hit an iceberg when delivered and honestly I was afraid the books were ruined. There was a tiny bit of corner bump on the back cover corner and the slip case. Its not the end of the world but I wish it was not there. No, I won't be returning the books - I just can't put these books down!Seller, it would be best if you packed the books in a better fitting box rather than relying on the bubble wrap to overcome sloppy packing. You've charged enough to justify having a box made to the correct size.Publisher: oh bravo! These books are a treasure to me.Reader of this review: don't hesitate - you won't regret this purchase at all. 100-Star rating for sure!!!!!

Blown away
I got this set of books for my brother for his birthday. I wasn't sure what to expect but saw the great reviews and dove right into it with the hopes it would be worth the money. Absolutely stunning books. I'm flabbergasted at how much detail is in them and how well made they are. Very heavy and beautiful. I don't have photos of it but I may at some point because I now want a set for myself! The details in these books is stunning. I honestly can't say enough good things about them. My brother is obsessed with them and hasn't put them down since I gave them to him.

Magnificent ship, magnificent book.
This was part of my son's 50th birthday present. He is over the moon with it, having a life-long fascination with all things Titanic. He treasures it to the extent he has yet ( 5 months later ) to break the cellophane sealing the book for fear it will begin to devalue ! ! ! He'll take the plunge before long and we'll have a little celebration ( like Prince Philip cutting the ribbon to open a new project ! ) If you have in-depth interest in all the technical details down to the material and manufacturer of the last screw and all matters Titanic this fabulous book is for you. ( P.S. it's very heavy )
