Excellent addition to your home stereo setup!!
This is an excellent CD player for the money. I consider myself to be a budding Hi-Fi enthusiast (read: not so keen to splash the cash around willly nilly) and have a decent sized CD collection so I owed it to myself to purchase a dedicated CD player. I used to play my CDs through a DVD player in the years past and recently via my PS3. I have a pretty decent pairing of a NAD C320BEE stereo amplifire and Wharfedale Diamond 8.1 speakers resting on custom made speaker stands. I looked around the market for dedicated CD players (admittedly there aren't as many choices as one might think) and demoed a few as well. I finally came accross this TEAC player which seemed perfect for my needs. I have a large part of my music collection in mp3s and so a USB input was a must. So I bit the bullet and got myself one of these babies. My verdict so far, a superb player for the money! I was impressed with the look and feel of this player and it looks just great stacked up with the amp. Very stable too and was impressed with the rock solid transport as well. Noise levels are acceptable and I could not make out any intrusions to music heard at lower than average volumes. The display is great although I could do with a wider screen (or a smaller font) to fit more text but that is just nitpicking! I previously played my mp3s through a phono jack connected between my amp and mp3 player. Now I just plug in my thumb drive and play the songs directly off the player with the upside of using the player's DAC to process the files. The TEAC does not support my dinosaur of an mp3 player (the Creative Zen Vision M 30 gig - brilliant player that has served me well for over half a decade) but as long as I can plug in my thumb drive to play the mp3s, thats fine by me. I like the fact that the player displays folder names while navigating the thumb drive (although for some strange reason it does not display folders in alphabetical order). What I don't like is the remote control design/layout which is totally non-intuitive and hard to operate in low light coditions, but that again is nitpicking. Hope this is compatible with the Logitech Harmony universal remote :) Right, onto the main feature, the CD player itself. As I said a very solid transport along with a high quality 1 bit DAC makes the music come to life. There is a noticeable difference between playing my CDs through the PS3/DVD player and the TEAC. Admittedly, my ears aren't the most well trained, but to me it just sounded 'right'. And that makes it perfect for my needs.

Pleasuring me aurally.......
Wonderful piece of kit for a number of reasons: 1) It works beautifully with an i-pod classic - to the point where I can access all of my playlists, albums and songs using the supplied remote control. 2) It sounds fantastic. I used this to replace a crocked Phillips CD recorder that was many years old and the improvement in sound quality is jaw dropping. The Burr-Brown witchcraft hidden within, even make my compressed MP3s sound digital quality. I run this with an old Cambridge A5 amp, a pair of Wharfedale Diamonds and Gale Monitors through a speaker switch and I'm spoiled. Very punchy. 3) It looks great - simple, sleek lines and an understated blue display - classic looking 4) It has a USB port - very handy. It also has a record function, which allows the recording of songs from CD to USB stick. I doubt that this will be used much, given that dragging and dropping on my laptop will be quicker, but it's a neat touch. 5) For the price the build quality seems fantastic. I can highly recommend this product.

Good quality separate CD player model CD-P650 with iPod facility
I bought this TEAC cd player to replace an elderly Technics which had started to skip.I wanted a player of this size which would also play files from my iPod and this model fitted my requirements. In general I have been pleased with it's performance the sound quality is good which should to be expected with the 8x oversampling and 3 beam laser. However it does not have a memory for playing cd tracks and always returns to the start of the disc if it is stopped or turned off, Most cd players now have a memory and I have found this a useful function. Also although it says it plays MP3 files it does not recognise my Creative Zen and when I queried this with the retailer he said it only functioned with an iPod so it seems the information was wrong certainly for this model.. One tip which might be useful is that when I set up the player the remote would't work, it was absolutely dead it transpired that a small switch on the back should be set to "single system" in remote control box and then it worked fine. Incidentally I haven't used the record function and I am unlikely to.Finally my Technics had a limited volume control via the remote the TEAC model doesn't have this facility which I found useful. All in all though I consider this model good value for money providing you don't pay full price!

Things just ain't what they used to be..
Nobody likes a whinger. I have to confess when I read a lengthy Amazon review full of bitterness and misery, I am tempted to think the faulty item is the person, not the product. So I offer this with reluctance. Just believe me when I tell you I rarely return anything. And I'll keep it brief. CD players: once plentiful, cheap and dependable. Now scarce, expensive and unreliable. Old one lasted years, finally gave up. Bought a Cambridge Topaz from Amazon. It arrived faulty. Sent it back. Bought this Teac. Arrived working. Broke after a fortnight: wouldn't read disks. Sent it back. Another arrived. Worked for 5 weeks. Broke. Same fault. But, damnit, outside the one month no-quibble return period. Amazon ask me to go to Teac, and gave me a phone number. Called it. They don't actually make it. They passed me to Onkya. They dont actually repair it. They passed me to Sontec. They eventually did repair it, and passed it to Citylink, who promptly lost it. When they've sorted themselves out and given me my money back, I'll ask myself the question: CD or not CD? And given all these slings and arrows I'll probably give up and plug my MP3 player into my amp instead. Makes you nostalgic for a few valves and vinyl.

The affordable, dedicated CD player is being threatened with extinction by streaming music and home media servers. Get this one while you can! The CD player may survive as a niche product, but it will likely be expensive. Teac has emerged as a leader in this shrinking market, and in fact they manufacture the transports for many high-end players. Blu-ray players will continue to play CDs as well, and in some cases do so brilliantly, but the good ones won't be cheap and aren't exactly designed for your typical hi-fi stereo setup. This is a great CD player and for what you get, astonishingly cheap. It features a high-end digital audio converter (DAC) chip, a robust drive mechanism, and a solidly designed chassis power supply. All in all it delivers top flight sound, probably 95% of what the really high end stuff delivers for less than 5% of the price. It's very robust and plays all of my CDs, even the old scratched ones that survived my dorm room and barrack days. It is accurate with good pacing and a neutral sound. It also has a very convenient front panel USB host port which works perfectly with my iphone, both for music stored on the device and streaming through it. So you can hook up any old iPhone, iPad or iTouch and have a fully featured music streamer, using the high quality DAC. Nice! That's a huge savings over a dedicated streamer, with a vastly improved interface. The USB port powers your i-device so you won't ever run out of juice if you just want to leave it plugged in. Add this player into your stereo setup and you are future-proof: all your CDs will play, plus all the streaming and digital music you have through your i-device. It doesn't support native SACD format (too bad) but will play the CD layer of SACDs very nicely. Since most SACDs are better recorded and mastered than regular CDs it takes the sting off not playing SACD. It won't play Blu-Ray or DVD audio which is pretty rare now anyway. The headphone amp works very well and has it's own volume control. It isn't quite as spacious sounding as my dedicated headphone amp, but it is dead quiet and thus an improvement over my amplifier's headphone output which has a slight hiss to it. Improvements in manufacturing have meant that CD players are approaching their highest quality to price ratio ever, while at the same time the market is shrinking. How long will manufacturers like Sony and Teac continue to offer these products? I'm not sure: if you look at radio tuners, for example, it is almost impossible now to buy a new, high quality, dedicated tuner. On the other hand, if you look at record players, the price/quality ratio has never been better and they are widely available. Will CD players flourish as a niche product like record players, or fade away like radio tuners? Already the new generation of automobiles are leaving out the CD player, so we will probably find out soon. The Japanese market, where CD sales are still climbing, will likely keep it alive for some time. But why gamble? At this price buy it now. And for those people who don't understand how component stereos work: you need an amplifier, speakers, and cables to connect them to get sound out of this, unless you are using your headphones exclusively. You don't need anything to listen on your headphones, just turn it on and plug them in. To use your ipod you need a cable.
