While their weight do vary, 1 being the lightest and 3 the heaviest it isn’t the weight that accomplished the mission. It is the size of the blade. When “set” in the water with boat moving the blade acts like a plane on a submarine and pulls it down. The larger the number the deeper it pulls. The larger numbers will also put more strain on your main line so make sure it is good. Not chafed, nicked, frayed or just plain old and weakened by ultraviolet exposure.

Q: What top speed can this be used for Wahoo trolling?

So wahoo trolling is at a faster speed than trolling Spanish.. This will troll good at around 6.5 knots. If you go any faster you will need a serious rod as this does bend your rod quite a bit at 6.5 knots. So yes you can troll at 10 knots with this planer but have a rod that can handle at least a 10lbs of drag on it. Hope this helps..

I tried to use the #3 planer with my 6 arm umbrella rig with the reflective silhouette fish, and at 5 mph, I could get it to stay beneath the surface. I'm going to have to add some serious weight to it, I believe, to get it to stay down. I'm not sure it will dive to 40'.
