The Old Wive's Tale: 4 (Five Towns)

Not much to say. This is an ebook.

I've titled this review riveting, because I can't stop reading the book. There's no adventure, no excitement as such, no thrilling denouement to come, but the telling of a family's intricate and interwoven lives is brilliant.

The Old Wives' Tale was a book chosen by a member of my bookclub. I loved it, and so did everyone else. It really evokes a sense of living in times gone by. Arnold Bennett deserves to be better known. He paints big themes into his book, while keeping you enthralled by his realistic and unexpected details of everyday life. Thoroughly recommended.

Must admit I did find it hard going at first. Not read anything like it before but once I’d got into I had to keep going.

It is a very long book. I have not started on it yet.

Took me back to an age and set of values both long forgotten.

Bought as a book club read. Not quite my cup of tea but as it was very reasonably priced no problems.

This is a very well written and crafted book. There is never any confusion over characters or any errors in continuity. Its themes are still valid today - love, loss, deception etc. It is easy to read.
