Suncast SS027 Hand Held Spreader For Ice Melt/Sand/Salt Snow De-Icers

This salt spreader is a decent handheld unit, but you ought to know going in that the aperture for the salt to hit the wheel is relatively narrow, and larger diameter crushed salt will easily get jammed up in the small hole. The churner at the bottom is also insufficiently sized for salt. It seems to me that this spreader was designed for grass seed, or granular fertilizer where the diameters are significantly smaller than crushed rock salt used for salting roads. Knowing this, one can simply make sure that they purchase salt more appropriate to the device.

This works OK, but jams frequently. If you can tolerate that, you won't be too unhappy. It does a decent enough job so if your driveway is small (ours is wide enough for one car and can fit two cars front to back).

Works great but only lasted for one season. I bought it for my elderly neighbor. Next season that he tried use it, the black plastic crank-handle broke off. The plastic cracked and the handle broke off.

I like this ice melt spreader but it gets clogged when it gets low on ice melt pellets. Just need to keep it fairly full. It does a great job otherwise.

Used for sidewalk salt!

I bought this last season and used it for the first time this past winter. Love it. A much better option than a scooper I had been using. It distributes the salt nicely, evenly and w/o a mess on my gloves. After 10 years of living in the Midwest, I wish I had found this early.

Unfortunately this item would be an excellent product if it wasn't lacking in one of the more important areas, feeding the distributor.There is a very small black nub that sifts the salt/sand/icemelt into the very large square hole. The problem with this small black nub, it barely makes it to the hole let alone covering the hole enough to actually force product down and into the distributor. Using this product you will find your self constantly shaking and sifting with your hand to get all of the product to the bottom to actually spread.In addition to this small but major mishap, it jams religiously. Every rotation if anything other than sand is inside of it, it will jam.In closing, you may be able to avoid jams if using sand. However, there is no avoiding the lack of feed to the distributor.

I thought this salt spreader would be heavier duty then the basic Scott hand spreader I've used for years but it looks pretty much the same to me except for the color. It clogs with the granular magnesium chloride salt that I use. Might work OK with calcium chlroide flakes, but so does the seed spreader. but any clumps block it up. I end up using it as a bucket and throwing the salt by hand. I should just get a medium size bucket to save on trips filling this thing.

Very cheaply made. Poorly made plastic gears stripped after a single use. It worked well for five seconds. Tried it with salt and sand; trying to spread a cup of either was too much for this spreader. It needs to have metal gears and a sturdier construction to do its job. I can't recommend buying this; not sure what the positive reviews were about? It might spread styrofoam beads ok; not suitable for sand or salt.

This is actually a piece of crap. I bought it it just Jambs up. When you fill it with salt. I requested a refund and nobody seemed to care.Do not buy. You will be disappointedReview only got 1 star rating cause I cannot select 0 star rating which it deserves

It holds a lot of salt but the salt gets under the spreading wheel and jams everything up then you can't spin wheel

The handle is either locked in position or if I open it, all the salt pours out of the bottom. I went to the dollar store and bought a plastic jar with a lid that is working much better
