Poor videographers, this one's for you!
I'm sure you know the difference between this and the A6000 spec-sheet-wise but let me add a more blunt distinction from an owner's perspective: A5100 is for video shooters and A6000 is a photography monster.More bluntness:- No, the touchscreen isn't all that great and don't buy it just for that. Well it's not bad, but it's the 179 AF points (same as A6000) that's more important for easy/one-man/stedicam focusing.- Small body = heating problem (overheats after 5 mins of shooting in XAVC-S (which offers dubious advantage over AVCHD of A6000) and about 17 mins in AVCHD)- Small body = bad grip.+ About 5.5K cheaper than A6000. That's the only real advantage it has. So if you are cash strapped, save some dough over A6000 and put that in lenses.+ Stop calling it a selfie camera! It is an ILC with a big APS-C sensor (again, same as A6000) that gives great low-light performance (upto ISO 1600), sharp 1080p image (much better than comparable Canons and Nikons) and a helpful 180° screen for vlogs.- It shares the same NP-FW50 battery with the A6000 and the runtime is not that great. So add the cost of a spare unit and a charger too.+ The lack of viewfinder and hot shoe is a plus for me because it keeps the weight down, allowing you to get more creative shots. I have the same indifference towards the lack of headphone/mic port - it's always dual-system audio for me and the on-board mics are actually pretty good for casual stuffs.+ SD slot on the side. A6000 has it under the battery cover.+ Less buttons = distraction-free shooting. This one's highly subjective! Here're some scenarios along with my preferred settings where the fast AF is a godsend for the single/rig-free shooter (Movie Manual Exposure mode) -* Close-ups/dolly shots: Center Lock-On AF [ON], AF-C, Center AF, AF Track Duration [HIGH], AF Drive Speed [NORMAL], Pre-AF [OFF], Face Detection [ON], touchscreen unused* Walk-n-talk shots: Same as above but with Center Lock-On AF [OFF] and with the Help button assigned to Focus Hold (press and hold to lock focus)* Dialogue with focus pull (static shot): Same as above but this time I'm using touch screen to pull focus. Note that even when focus area is set to CENTER, touching temporarily overrides it to WIDE. It'll show a blinking SPOT FOCUS sign on the screen when you touch something and after a few seconds it locks down the focus (blinking stops) so no need to press and hold the Help as in the previous scenario.* Stedicam shots: Same as above but don't get too fancy with wide open aperture and crazy focus pulls! I sometime turn on Center Lock-On AF.Finally, some jargon buster -* Center Lock-On AF = Object tracking* AF Track Duration = How fast it tracks = How easily distracted it gets* AF Drive Speed = How quickly the focus changes from one subject to other* Focus Areas: WIDE = Use all the focus points/entire screen. CENTER = Duh. Don't use others. KISS.* Focus Mode: Leave it at AF-C since manual focus on Sony E-mount lenses are very unreliable because of their fly-by-wire design. A really good deal but....
I don't really write reviews, this is one of the very few reviews I've ever written in my 7+ yrs of engagement with amazon.to begin with, This camera is ideal for every beginner photographer. With less buttons, its easy to be used but the same will become a trouble when you will get better at using a DSLR and will look for shortcut buttons to access frequently used features. The size is very compact, like really compact. So much that sometimes it wouldn't even give you the feel of a DSLR but will rather look like a point and shoot camera.Picture quality is excellent considering its an APSC sensor camera. Super fast auto focus will prove to be very helpful in cases like street and sports photography. I mostly use it for street photography and its amazing at that. Now lets talk about the elephant in the room - I reckon that if you are reading this review right now you might be on a tight budget, or are looking for an entry level mirrorless DSLR. This camera is an amazing piece of tech but it doesn't have a viewfinder. Though some might be okay with it, but where I found this to be a downside is when I was doing street photography in the middle of a bright summer afternoon. Sure you will be able to see what you are framing in the view finder but the little details that make for a good street shot will be missed becayse the screen isnt really a champ under bright sunlight. I would recommend you to go with the A6000 if this sounds like trouble to you. Other than that, this camera is a STEAL deal and its better than any other Canon Nikon camera out there in the same price range.I am adding a few sample shots shot using the kit lens and the SONY 50MM f1.8 FE lens.for more follow me on insta - @herculiez. Hope this helped.

A great great great camera for beginners
It's a compact mirrorless digital camera with the option of interchangeable lens. It's compact size makes it ideal for street photography without disturbing the subject by the presence of a large camera body. Easy to carry everywhere. Sony's 24.3 megapixel image is great with real to life colour science. Good image details even if zoomed 50 % in photo editing softwares. Raw still shooting available. Full HD video available with flip LCD screen. If you are looking for an entry level mirrorless digital camera to learn photography without spending much money, this is a great camera even in 2020. Above all its a Sony product. It will not let you down. Note: Since the camera body is smaller it's ideal to attach a safety wrist strap with the camera. Read user manual before installing the lens, charging and to explore the functions and menus. It's a very helpful tip for beginners. Also, while closing the lens cap please be careful not to make scratches on the lens front area. Avoid long video recording as it may cause internal heating. But it's not a fault. Focus is great. Kit lens is ideal for beginners. Read photo books by master photographers...get inspired...start taking photos. All the best.
