Fun Introducton to the World of the Micro
This is a fun instrument that might end up being a gateway to greater (well smaller) things for kids. Let's face it, its not going to be a precision scientific instrument for this price and anyone expecting to view cell nuclei or even spiders leg hair is probably going to be disappointed, but stick a leaf under it and at least some wonders are revealed. That is likely to be the best use of this microscope: casual viewing of everyday objects by kids. It will show them that things like leaves are indeed wondrous constructs. It's fun and interesting and would make a great gift for kids of an enquiring nature.

Interesting toy for older kids
This microscope toy is fun for older kids or younger ones with assistance. The microscope itself is easy enough to use but aligning the slide / item you wish to view is tricky and my 9 year old quickly got frustrated with it. There are no spring clamps to hold the slides in place so the slightest movement sends the object you are examining out of the field of view. It was easier for the 9 year old to use it to view large objects like leaves where it doesn’t matter where the microscope is positioned.Focusing and zooming is easy enough with the small wheels on the side, although those of us who wear glasses found it really tricky to get our eyes lined up to see through the microscope because we couldn’t put our eye as close to the eye piece as those without glasses on.Using the phone holder worked as an alternative for those of us who found this tricky, and to allow the younger ones to see through the microscope without having to touch it and risk moving it. The phone holder does require you to hold the phone balanced in one hand to support its weight whilst being positioned carefully on top of the microscope without accidentally moving anything - a challenge in itself! We managed to get some interesting close ups of a dead fly we found, and looked at our own skin and hair as well as leaves, carpet, and each of the glass slides included in the set.If you have a kid particularly interested in this sort of thing this is a good starting point to gauge their interest before splashing out on something more substantial, and it’s a fun novelty with enough functionality to make it worth under £20.

Great entry level microscope
This is a fabulous entry level portable microscope from the amazon brand TENCCO. It's really easy to use, and I don't think its use should be limited to children - anyone can find joy in using this when out and about in nature. it is so small its easy to pop into a bag to allow everyone have a look at what's around us- up close! We are currently using to look for fractal patterns in nature - so even as you move out of the oh look, there's a pattern inside this leaf' phase, there is always something new to move onto.Obviously this is an entry-level microscope with a magnification of 100x - 250 x range. There isn't always enough light to see well but a phone torch held nearby helps that if the day looks gloomy. Altogether I think it is an amazing gadget for the price which is currently reduced even further. There's a 35% discount on the standard £24.99 price bringing it down to around £16.25.Fab present for the inquisitive mind. Five stars

Very frustrating and difficult to use The magnified view can be very good
100x-250x Mini Pocket Microscope for Kids Adults, Protable Handheld Microscope with 5 Microscope SlidesI found this microscope very frustrating to use. I found it very difficult getting an image in place, let alone focused. The microscope needs a flat surface, and has to be kept very still when viewing - i.e. don't touch! The view through the microscope is a mirror image which makes it more difficult to line up the object etc. to how you want it - move down, and the image moves up, move left, and the image moves right!I gave up on the slides, they slid around too much to ever find where the specimen was on them. The easiest object is something like a leaf where you can just plonk the microscope over it and look at it. This is OK for the spot you're actually looking at but, if you want to move along that object, then you'll have problems. When you are able to get the view right, it can be very good. One thing I tried was a sage leaf and all the tiny hairs on it could be clearly seen.I gave up completely using the adapter with the phone. I just couldn't get it right (which may have been me). There is also the additional problem that you have to hold the phone all the while which, of course, means that the microscope will be moving all the time.Think of ithe microscope as an educational toy for someone with patience. Because it is difficult to use properly, I think any child would soon lose interest in it.

Works but a bit fiddly
Yes this works in that you can see microscopic details of items placed in front of the lens. However, it is a fiddly process to get to see anything that is not one of the specimen slides. The item needs to be very close to the lens to get the best result and then you end moving or knocking the item in question so hard to get a steady view. I did manage to see some mineral in a rock which was cool but not so easy to get a photo of this. It is a pity there are no blank slides included so you can place your own items on them.Basically this will appeal to kids or be used by someone out in the field maybe to check things before getting them back to a lab environment. A larger more stable and adaptable microscope will be used in a lab environment. I think with practice this will become more useful to the user. This is a hard product to grade unless you know what you need it for, it works but unless you use other microscopes on a regular basis it is hard to gauge how good it is. I have given it 4 stars as it basically works.

Impressive quality
I have to admit I wasn’t certain what to expect when I ordered this mini pocket microscope for my grand nephew as a gift. As he hasn’t received this as yet I will have to base this on my experiences with it. Having little experience since school (too many years ago) with a microscope, I am pretty happy with how easily I was able to learn to use this! So am certain the child will be able to learn even faster ;). Loading this with the required AA battery (not included), I started off by exploring the mini microscope itself. Via the 2 push buttons, one turns the LED light on and one the UV light (possibly an area of concern with a very young child?). There was a bit of a learning curve for operating the adjustment wheels for the magnification and learning to keep the microscope still, but I soon got the hang of it. Initially I viewed the included slides (via sandwiching the slide between the clear plastic flip door and the microscope) and was thoroughly amazed and intrigued by what I was seeing. I can well imagine the nephew being quite taken with the bee leg and the fly mouth parts! These slides may also be the ah-ha moment for further exploration and usage among the uninitiated. Then I tried it on some leaves from my house plants. The magnification range of 100-250x will have to be taken at their word as I have no way of measuring that. But judging from what I was seeing this little microscope outperformed my expectations! Things were crisp and clear and definitely magnified a lot. I did not use the phone clip to try that function of this microscope. As for the microscope itself, it is very lightweight yet seemed very sturdy and durable. Love the fun, bright yellow colour. Everything, buttons and dials, operated well and smoothly. Being largely made of plastic, there were no sharp edges or burrs. I really like and appreciate the carrying case which is zippered, semi rigid and comes with a wrist strap. This is wonderful for protection and storage as well as transporting it. And the small size is perfect for the littler people, although as an adult I certainly enjoyed using this. I am hoping this will intrigue the nephew’s parents and become a family used tool.
