“No individual—not even Freud himself—has had a greater impact on modern psychotherapy.” --Psychology Today CLASSIC SELF-HELP FROM A RESPECTED PIONEER OF PSYCHOTHERAPY From social anxiety to phobias to post-traumatic stress disorder, sources of anxiety in daily life are numerous, and can have a powerful impact on your future. By following the rules of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), created by world renowned therapist Dr. Albert Ellis, you can stop anxiety in its tracks if you will admit this important fact: Things and people do not make you anxious. You do. Your unrealistic expectations produce your needless anxiety. Yet not all anxiety is needless… Healthy anxiety can ward off dangers and make you aware of negative things that you can change. Unhealthy anxiety inhibits you from enjoying everyday activities and relationships, causes you to perform poorly, and blocks your creativity. Using the easy-to-master, proven precepts of REBT, this classic book not only helps you distinguish between healthy and unhealthy anxiety, but teaches you how to: • Understand and dispute the irrational beliefs that make you anxious •Use a variety of exercises, including rational coping self-statements, reframing, problem-solving methods, and Unconditional Self-Acceptance (USA), to control your anxiety •Apply over 200 maxims to control your anxious thinking as well as your bodily reactions to anxiety …and much more, including examples from dozens of cases Dr. Ellis treated successfully. Now you can overcome the crippling effects of anxiety—and increase your prospects for success, pleasure, and happiness at home and in the workplace. Review: Not the same old same old - I have read other Albert Ellis books and there are some things that are the same but there are different self talk suggestions for anxiety. The book is set up so that the important ideas and suggestions are easy to find they are numbered and listed together. I have found that his books are very helpful he speaks of how a person thinks when they make themselves anxious he lays out what you are saying to yourself and what thoughts you need to change to be less anxious. Most other books I have read have case histories where people who used the author's formula and got better, there are some examples of that in this book but Dr. Ellis isn't offering pie in the sky answers he is very practical in his expectations of success. I used Dr. Ellis' books in conjunction with therapy and found it to be very helpful to change how I see life and I think that is why I am having less problems with depression these days. Review: A good read on the subject matter. - A well-written book that helps to identify the way our own irrational beliefs or stressors can get in the way of our efforts and actual desires.

Good book BUT not the answer to anxiety if you have low minerals and vitamins
It was a good book with useful information BUT the book only applies if you are a healthy person with some mild issues. My story in a short note: struggled for the past few years with anxiety/panic attacks/ mild depression.I had no reasons to feel like that; sure we all have stress and past baggage we can blame for our problems but it was more then that. My spiritual journey , the 1000 of self-help books, failure to meditate no matter what, the fake hopes of feeling better, finding something that works only temporarily ALL of it thought me something but I still did not have found myself, did not FEEL myself, it was horrible; the ups and downs ..all my suffering ended when I got my results back from my blood work. Low magnesium, iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. I will never forget the day I took my first magnesium supplement; the relief was amazing. Right the very next day, I felt a calmness I never knew. I am cured!!!!! Do yourself a favor and look up magnesium deficiency , test your blood before you buy 1000 of books for self help that will only help you solve part of the puzzle. I will never go another day without magnesium.

The Best Remedy for Anxiety
This is the single best self-help book I've ever read. Before beginning it, anxiety had crippled me. Why? I had been taught or learned to think irrationally. Ellis' method is nothing more or less than a way of teaching you how to think rationally in a world that encourages us to think irrationally. Ellis gives you a thousand weapons with which to attack the irrationality that creates anxiety and anxiety attacks, and it works, and it works fast. But you have to use it. Thanks to this book and Ellis' REBT theory, I was also led to SMART Recovery, which has a Facebook fan page here [...] At long last, rational solutions for substance abuse, too, nased on REBT. I recommend anyone experiencing anxiety buy this book immediately and at the expense of any and all others.

Great information
I do so love the wealth of information I get from Dr. Ellis' books. However, an entertaining writer he is not. The information in this book is very good but often presented with a very dry delivery and is occasionally repetitive. This would not be a book I simply throw at my clients and ask them to read. They would be asleep in the first 5 pages. So in summary, I think the content and the purpose of the book is wonderful. Just a poor presentation.

I thoroughly recommend this book
Albert Ellis has written many books to help people solve their personality problems without extensive and expensive professional therapy, though he does stress that the reader may need other help if their problems seems overwhelming. He explains how we create our own anxieties from our irrational beliefs, and how to 'talk yourself round' and escape the misery of self-defeating talk. He uses plenty of examples taken from his professional experience, and provides key thoughts to help you analyse exactly what you are doing to yourself and how to stop doing it. I thoroughly recommend this book, and the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy concept as being a system which you can, with a certain amount of willpower, apply to yourself.

Something for just about everyone
Much of what was in this book really doesn’t apply to me. For instance Ellis mentions and spends quite a bit of time using fear of public speaking and insecurities in people’s love lives as a springboard to coping with anxieties. Well, I taught school for 40 years, so getting up in front of an audience doesn’t bother me a bit. And at the age of 72 and having been married for almost 50 years, I have not anxieties in my love life. I did find much of what he said about “Irrational Beliefs” helpful. I wish he had had a section of geriatric anxiety, anxiety for old folks, because it is a pretty unique kind of anxiety. It often doesn’t include much of what he covers in the book (love life, speaking publicly, money problems, etc.). Maybe there are books devoted to exactly that topic. This book is very prescription and will undoubtedly help many people who try to cope with anxiety on their own. I recommend it.

A great source of help
This book made me realize that my suffering is not particularly different from others, and has been addressed. This, by itself, its of great confort. The book has helped me a lot to learn techniques that reduce anxiety.
