Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga [DVD] [2024]

A great addition to the Mad Max series.
I don't usually buy films so close to release, but I'm a Mad Max madman. I didn't know how I would feel about a story without Max as the star, but went in with an open mind. For me, this film captures the essence of Fury Road, but is a lot more about the human condition than the previous mainline installment. I enjoyed it immensely and would recommend to anyone that buys into Millers wasteland saga, and even those that just enjoy crazy, but deeper than they appear, action films. No matter how far gone people are in Miller's world, they all started off full of hope and it's a message that maybe mirrors today's life struggles a little uncomfortably. The vehicles, as always, are amazing.

Stunning scenery stand out performances Motorcycles.
A Masterclass of Action and spectacle. I could end the review there but this film deserves to shine in the spotlight. Stunning cinematography, and surpasses Fury road while it leaves to one side Max for a while which enables the story to enter new territory , And why not. As a long time fan of Mad Max I was interested to see what George Miller and his team could come up with. knowing this is a prequel and stars two great main actors Anya Taylor and Chris Hemsworth makes it particularly exciting. With great Vistas and wide distant shots it looks stunning and really draws you in from the start. I think the trailer was misleading in a way, it didn't really portray the Awesome spectacle of it all which is a shame as maybe more people would have been drawn to the cinema to watch one of the best examples of Post Apocalyptic Action Scale in modern cinema history. Warner Brothers, put out a new trailer get this film back in the cinema ( it deserves a big screen) I for one would also welcome a Furiosa 2. Furiosa And The Fury Roader.

Getting Furious[a]
George Miller returns to give us the story of how Furiosa became the person we met in Mad Max, Fury Road. This being a prequel to that means you can watch this if you haven't seen any Mad Max movies. Not easy to talk about this without potentially mild spoilers. So be aware..This is a good example of why you shouldn't go into things with expectations. Because action chase movie a la Fury Road this isn't quite. It's a different beast. It gets all it's exposition out the way quickly in the opening credits. Then you meet Furiosa. In the place where you would expect.Action follows right away. This is good action. You always know who is who and what is going on.It's a little distracting though that not all of this seems to be location based. Some of it looks studio bound. It's far more convincing than if it was entirely digital. But I still couldn't help but notice it. However one character in this part makes a commanding impression. As does Chris Hemsworth as gang leader Dr. Dementus. He is amazing in this role. One of those performances when an actor goes close to the edge but never over it, thus every line and gesture commands your attention. I like the accent he used as well.Prequels of course exist to tell back story, so this then has a lot to get in. With some possibly familiar and some not so familiar locations. So there is action. There is also a lot of talk. Pretty compelling stuff mostly though. She grows up, with a few plans in mind. This clicked for me sporadically in the first half. I was liking it's ambition. But I wasn't loving it. But then probably about halfway through, in the middle of an action scene, I suddenly thought 'wow this is pretty awesome as a set piece, isn't it?'. And it was. We do also get Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack, who is utterly magnificent as well. Thanks to his character being superbly and very appealingly stoic.Anya Taylor-Joy, and those playing younger Furiosa, don't have much dialogue. Their performances need to use expression. But you can always tell what's going on in their mind, so they are very good.It does get a bit more into action in it's second half. There is one bit that was a bit too obviously green screen, but this does seem to be more location based. There is very little dialogue in some of these, as it's trying to let the action speak for itself. Which, once I'd realised that, does rather work. The film does have an interesting narrative structure, which succeeds at what it tries to do. This does make the passing of time work. The ending is really good. Some very well written dialogue in it.And I think the very final scene is quite successful too.Rather an 8/10 film for me. Like all prequels, not least a certain Star Wars trio, it does exist to tell it's back story and nothing more. So it doesn't quite have the drive of Fury Road and thus I wasn't into it quite as much as I was with that. But it was a good experience in many ways, so I'm glad I saw it.There are things going on during the end credits. But they are not essential. The dvd goes into the main menu with no ads or trailers.Language and subtitle options:Languages: English. Castilian Spanish. English Audio descriptive. Pretty disappointing compared to its predecessor
Loved Fury Road and was really looking forward to this…but can’t help but feel disappointed. Hemsworth great…rest of the cast less so. Felt FAR too long, and just never felt like it really got going. After nearly two and a half hours, I was left thinking…”is that it?”.

Another great George Miller film
I've watched Mad Max since the first one came out and liked them all, this was no exception. Well shot and explains the history of Furiosa.

FURIOSA BLURAY (A MAD MAX SAGA)
"Mad Max" is nowhere in this film. I found it hard to be objective as I don't think I fit the intended audience brackett. My wife really wanted to see this so ....The action never (repeat never) stops. The superb stuntwork is breathtaking...but if you saw FURY ROAD did you not think the long very long chases across the deserts were too similar??? Maybe not! The sets and CGI are mindblowingly good (as they were in FR). As far as the acting goes I thought Hemsworth was brilliant - scary and also with litlle quiet touches of humour. Tom Burle is good but diapears too soon. The rest of the cast are a wonderful bunch of quirky scary cool nasties. Then there is Anya Taylor -Joy - Top billed over Chris - doesn't appear for over an hour and then I was thinking - IS it her yet? (It was). Sh had to compete with Charlise Theron and I know she is a favourite of many, but I thought she was miscast. It's a bit of a puzzle that this real prequel should appear 2 years AFTER the sequel! Watch the end credits and we see snatches from "Fury Road", all very odd. A lack of humanity and real emotion and perhaps a need to edit some of the long chase scenes made me feel 3 stars ppropriate, but the quality of the BluRay and the xtras deserve 5 - So 4 stars. Fans will lap this one up (My wife loved it!)
