There isn't a ton of text in this book, but what's there is perfect. Between the pictures and the text, the book really decodes what makes a Japanese garden a Japanese garden. It also tells the story behind many of the elements in traditional Japanese gardens, and the photos are simply drop-dead gorgeous. It gave me lots of ideas for my blank-slate backyard, and tons of inspiration to get started on my own Japanese garden.

The kindle edition has absolute terrible photo quality. and the photos are the book. it's a shame. not worth the money on kindle.

A review of 23 different gardens - good that they spread the choice somewhat wider than usualUsual high spec quality of any Tuttle book - would have been nice to have maps of the garden layoutsIf I had a criticism its that this is a work by 3 people and it seems to lack a guiding theme but you could do a lot worse as a starter book on Japanese Gardens

I bought this book to get some ideas for a Japanese style garden I’m planning. I wasn’t interested in the history of Japanese designs...until I read this! Well written with just enough detail to allow the reader to understand the elements of the different types of Japanese gardens. The pictures a beautiful and I love the way full pages are given over to them. Looks great, reads well. Go on buy it!
