Are the handles solid? I want to use them to strap the cooler down.

Don, I don't know. I run a landscape company and this is the only cooler we use, but we never had tied it down. It either sits in the back of the flat bed, or in the passenger rear seat. 1 bag of ice last into the next morning. Great performing cooler!

Is the cooler safe to use with hot liquids e.g. 165 degree F?

I have no idea, but I am very, very bitter that Amazon.com decided to send me this 5 gallon cooler when I very specifically order a 15 gallon cooler from them. The skeezy jerks thought it'd be funny to send me 1/3 of my order with no plans of fulfilling the final 2/3 of what I paid for. Lame, lame, super lame.Maybe it is safe to use with hot liquids, but I still don't have the one I originally ordered from these dirtbags and am therefore unable to experiment on your behalf.Gott is the best way to go for these coolers. Also, I believe Rubbermaid purchased them, so searching the Rubbermaid site might be the easiest way to find the limits of temperature on these. Good luck.I'm still very, very bitter.
