Darkly intense...
I absolutely loved this part of the series! I read this on the go from the moment I received my copy, didn't matter if I was getting my hair done, my nails done, waiting at the doctor's office, or at work - this book was with me at all times until I had read it from cover to cover. Lemony Snicket and Daniel Handler both do not disappoint, as usual. So many things start to make sense in this book, and a lot of questions are answered, albeit not the right ones. I loved this book because it had a more darker feel to it. Snicket seemed more serious (yes, that is possible), the tonality of the story had a more somber, grave feel to it. The town seemed even more grim than usual, and even Snicket had reached a point where he thought if it was worth fighting for anymore. It was very interesting for me to see an earnest, sober side to Theodora, who up until then was an unimportant figure for me. She breezed in and out of scenes and I could not take her seriously, she simply managed to add humor to an otherwise humorless book. Until now that is. It shows the gravity of the situation to have Theodora tell Snicket to let things be and go home. The evil of Hangfire is reaching new depths with each new installment to the series, that you can't figure out who's who anymore? Who's good? Who's joined the dark side? Ellington is on top of that list...I can't figure her out. I can't put my finger on it, but there's something off about her. I liked the scene with her and Snicket, and a glimpse into what could've been a possible romance budding. But I also really like Moxie, and enjoy her interactions with Snicket, and his seemingly unintentional disregard to her feelings. We also get to learn more about the secret organization that Snicket is a part of, and a lot more about his sister. To those who have read A Series of Unfortunate Events, we also get to hear about a few characters that you might recognize from his previous series. I can't wait to learn more about Beatrice though...if she even comes up. One last book before the whole mystery is wrapped up. Cannot wait!

Amazing book
Amazing book as I expected from Lemony Snicket, however the corners of the book were damaged and creased in transit.

Great series of books
Great series of books. All of which tie into some of the references from his other books like a Series Of Unfortunate Events (which is also a damn good series) Lemony Snicket is such a great author and all ages will enjoy his books.

a child like view of a not quite right world
Lemony Snicket creates a strange world, with a hint of Raymond Chandler, a hint of gothic, a child like view of a not quite right world. I love his eloquence and his wisdom. Very enjoyable.

Driving to the conclusion...
Questions, questions, so many questions. So far each book has left us with more questions and this one is no exception. Particularly in this book you're actually wondering about a character's allegiance and I can't quite work out who's side she's on but I certainly don't trust her as much as Lemony seems to! This time around someone is setting fires, truant officers of the dodgy variety are kidnapping kids and taking them to a new school which isn't exactly what it seems. Someone's being framed for the murders...but why? I love the wit and sarcasm of the book so much, but once again I'm never sure if what's going on is really correct, the plot changes so much and half the time I'm not sure whether or not Lemony is pulling my leg. This is the book we FINALLY found out the meaning of VFD. I find these books so original because of the writing style, unless you read ASOUE you won't read anything like it anywhere else. It's a particular brand of humour and it's one that has me cracking up. This time round I'm rooting for Lemony because I know he can handle himself whereas with the kids from ASOUE I always felt sorry for them and just....so much pity really. I should also mention that Count Olaf gets a mention, and Josephine makes an appearance. I fangirled. This is also the book, it has to be said, where we finally start to get some answers. Or do we? Muahahahaa. As suspected, some characters aren't who they seem, my loathing for a particular character shot up ten fold and I really rather wanted to throttle Lemony's boss. All in all this book is driving us towards the finale, and I'm excited to finally have all the pieces of the puzzle and work out what's going on!

Snicket Fan Review
Another very funny story from Lemony Snicket. The plot thickens and I cannot wait for the next instalment. I would love to hear more stories about Kit and Jacques Snicket.
