Planet Red Hulk

Haven't we seen this somewhere before?
OK. I got suckered into the Red Hulk -- the early issues were fun and had a central mystery ( Who is the Red-Hulk?), but that was resolved by issue 24 and now what do you have? Essentially a retread of some classic Hulk plots. Since the Rulk is just a meaner and smarter Hulk, then what we need is.. A meaner and smarter Thunderbolt Ross -- Enter Fortean! Let's do some unoriginal retconning! If you've read the Hulk as long as I have, this is getting to be pretty old. And then the Omegex? Please, he/she/it looks just like the Destroyer from the old Jack Kirby Thor days -- Marvel should pay his estate royalty (but they won't will they?). Can't Marvel come up with some original designs? I guess they really are sticking by their "if it ain't broke then there's no need to fix it" philosophy, churning out the same mediocre product by the comic-bookful. This would definitely be a 1 star review but for the brilliant art by Hardman and Pagulayan -- and some nice dialog by Parker ( I like the interaction between Rulk and Annie -- Hmm... Could there be a Wanda-Vision type of romance in the offing? But then again the Scarlet Witch could use some of that reality bending power of hers and make Annie human -- then we could get a retread of the Betty Ross - Bruce Banner romance with a Spring-Winter flavor ). The lack of originality and creativity is why I quit Marvel in the 90s -- but the 12 year old in me was (stupidly) mesmerized by those amazing Red-Hulk covers -- I should have just remained out of the loop and stuck with collecting the Masterworks -- now those are great!

Quite Impressive!
This is the second Red Hulk book that I read..the first being “Scorched Earth”. Like the first one, I found this one ALSO to be pretty good! The story is quite exciting. Few new and interesting characters are introduced in this book. First, there’s General Fortean, who was once a sub-ordinate of General Ross. Ross, who is actually the Red hulk, had faked his own funeral and shown as if he had died at the hands of the Red Hulk. Believing it to be true, Fortean now wants revenge on Red Hulk. Then, there’s the character of Zero/one, who is quite powerful. Her appearance and powers are quite unique. In one of the stories in this book (called “Planet Red Hulk”), the Red Hulk gets stranded on an alien planet, becomes the king of the locals and then leads them to war. It was like a repeat of the famous hulk story “Planet Hulk”. But this was intentional and the writer, Jeff Parker, has given a reasonable / believable explanation as to why this event happened for the Red Hulk. Now in the “Planet Red Hulk” storyline, the locals looked a lot like the “Na'vi” (the inhabitants of the planet “Pandora” from movie “Avatar”). Also, there were mountains floating in the air, JUST as in the “Avatar” movie. Though it’s not a big deal, it’s better if artists stick to originality and their own creativity, rather than taking something from a already existing and popular theme/movie/concept.Overall, the story in this book is quite impressive. The characters are also very good. Every character is nicely fleshed out, realistic and appealing. Very few writers are excellent at characterization and Parker is one of them.I think Jeff Parker has huge potential and someday he’ll be one of the best writers in the industry. I just hope someday Marvel makes him write the “X-Men” and/or “Wolverine”..that would be awesome!!The artwork is pretty good. Hardman has done pencil-work for most of the issues. I really like his work. I think he’s just PERFECT to draw hulk (red or green). Pagulayan has done two issues. He’s not as good as Hardman but still his work is nice. Zircher has provided artwork for last issue in the book. He’s also pretty good; not as good as Hardman but much better than Pagulayan. In the last issue there is one small back-story of Rick Jones who is now become “A-Bomb” (ridiculous name). This story is just about ok, just like a time-pass kind.Tim Seely, the penciller for this story, has done a pretty decent job.In the end, I’ll say that this book is a pretty decent read. Those who used to hate “Red Hulk” (mostly because of Bendis’ writing), they should start reading Jeff Parker’s work on the Red Hulk; it’s very impressive.
