![The Musketeers - Series 1 [DVD] [2014]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51iPypcAWCL.jpg)

With its critical acclaim and an ever increasing fan base, BBC ONE’s dazzling new drama The Musketeers will head to DVD and Blu-ray on 24th March 2014 This fresh 10-part adaptation of Dumas’ masterpiece tells the story of an elite group of soldiers who protect their Royal Masters at any cost. Starring Luke Pasqualino (Skins, The Borgias) as D’Artagnan, Tom Burke (Great Expectations, The Hour) as Athos, Santiago Cabrera (Merlin, Heroes) as Aramis and Howard Charles (Black Forest) as Porthos, the brothers in arms fight for what is just, tackling the evil machinations of Cardinal Richelieu – played by Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who, The Thick Of It). As they are propelled across seas and battlefields from masquerade balls to a remote convent, the Musketeers defend the honour of the Queen and the life of Constance Bonacieux, d'Artagnan's true love – played by Tamla Kari (The Inbetweeners Movie). Review: Excellent!!! - I went to watch this with a few apprehensions because I haven't fully enjoyed any of the musketeer films in the past. I won't lie, as a Merlin fan I definitely gave this a chance because Santiago Cabrera was in this (playing Aramis). I was pleasantly surprised with the level of acting provided by the whole cast. Tamla Kari as Constance is stunning and an exquisite actress. She and Luke Pasqualino were the only people I had previously seen in other things and they were even better in this! Luke makes a perfect D'Artagnan at a good age to still be young and cocky but not a boy, as in most musketeers adaptions. I really enjoyed this new look at the character. Tom Burke gets the main bulk of the attention, I think, and not wrongly. He's an excellent actor and plays the interesting character of Athos. Howard Charles as Porthos - wow!!! I had never heard of him before this and I'm so glad I was introduced to him because he's amazing! Santiago was incredible, as I had expected. Aramis is gorgeous and cheeky and Santiago embodies it well. Maimie McCoy and Peter Capaldi make two of the best BBC villians I've ever seen as the Cardinal and Milady, while Alexandra Dowling and Ryan Gage make a beautiful royal couple, embodying the majestic air of monarchs. There are some incredible guest stars throughout the series that add heaps of talent to the already incredibly talented show. Each episode is standalone with an arc running through each of them. This was good for me as if I missed any of the episodes (which, thankfully, I didn't) it wouldn't leave me confused and wishing I had On Demand. The show is brilliantly written, directed and produced and it really captures 17th century Paris and transports you into the dirty streets of the French capitol as well as the awe inspiring palaces and houses of the wealthy. After watching Atlantis and being disappointed after the excellent BBC shows like Doctor Who and Merlin, I was praying for this show to reach its full potential. I wasn't disappointed. All in all this show is exceptionally written and the acting is some of the best I've seen in a while and it stands alongside the other big shows from the BBC. Review: What else do you need on a winter evening, four gorgeous Musketeers! - Have loved the films since a small girl in 1950s. Introduced to by my mother who also loved them. Read the book aged ten. Read again over the years. Loved Dick Lester's two films. Love Dumas per se! Athos is the probably one of the best fictional characters in the history of the world. Tom Burke captures him perfectly. Love Aramis, D'Artagnan and Porthos. But Athos is the lynch pin and always was. Dumas wrote about him as if he had known someone just like Athos, his words are pure poetry about the understanding and love one man can have for another. His son Raoul and friend D'Artagnan. Which carries on wih D'Artagnan and Raoul so far. Only other is Shakespeare who has captured that rare thing. To write like that is to have experienced it. Not often a book can reduce me to tears of wonder, but Twenty years Later has. The only other is the in fiction of Stephen Ambrose and Band of Brothers. All those men, real or fiction would have understood each other. I am so looking forward to series two next year. Not exactly like the books but who cares. Clearly the writer, Adrian Hodges loves the Musketeers as much as those who already know them have done for decades. Great escapaism. Plus I live in the Pas de Calais and know all the places the four heroes traverse. Picardy, Bethune, Amiens and all points between here and Paris, even La Rochelle. Superb. Plus dressing them in leather and the Jack Sparrow boots as they should be as cavaliers, what more could anyone want on winter evenings!!!!!

Totally Charismatic and Wow!
I was a little apprehensive before the first episode began, however was soon won over by it - the locations and filming are of the highest order, some scenes (in HD) look like oil paintings of the period, amazing. The acting is amazing, no beautiful .. by episode 3 I was hooked and keen on the week going quickly so I could watch the next episode! I love the licences the drama takes .. so glad it's not watered down like so many productions these days; and the cultural mix of the key players is brilliant, works perfectly - thumbs up to the team for being so bold. They MUST do another series and soon, I cannot wait, it's that gripping. Having watched all the musketeers films over the years, this is by far the best, with intelligent story lines that read like a detective novellas, and acting that makes it all work so well. I hope they max the features in the next series, more of the humour and camaderie, more wine, more amorous activities, more action .. it's great now, but I got greedy for more of these elements (probably says more about me!). Anyway, great praise to the Beeb for this, a true winner anyway you look at it - everyone in this production is A1 .. well worth the licence fee on its own! I mean that. Roll on the Beeb's musketeers! More, more, more!

Musketeer fans take heart, while not following the traditional path in many ways our friends, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis as well as their young friend D'Artagnan are still the heroes we expect and don't disappoint even if the view has slightly changed. More than worth a view and you too will be utterly amazed at what the BBC can do in "Period drama for TV".

Great stories and sheer realism is what makes this a great series. The only downfall this is not on Blue ray yet. Can't wait for season 2!
