this is great for beginners or someone who want to know the ins and outs of spells and know what hexes are and how to deal with them.

I wish I'd had this book to read years ago. Absolutely love it! It's packed full with practical information. No boring filler! It's very informative on all the basics (and some a little more in depth) without droning on. The author is Wiccan, I'm not. This is not a Wiccan book. It touches on basically everything and I would highly recommend this book for anyone. The ONLY negative I feel I must mention, being an honest and impartial review, is a mention fairly early on stating never to consume rosemary, as it is toxic. If it had said toxic in excess quantities, ok, but it didn't. (Rosemary is my absolute favorite herb for seasoning meats and it's also beneficial in herbal teas). I debated then whether I even wanted to read any further at that point but I'm honestly glad I did. There really is a tremendous amount of useful information. Will definitely be a go-to book on my favorite shelf and I'm looking forward to reading some of her other books.I did received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review completely voluntarily.

This is definitely a great book for beginners. I was looking for something a bit more in depth, however, this book did a fantastic job of covering a broad range of subjects. However that comes at the cost of not going into the minute details. It definitely reads a lot more historical/cultural than practical as well. If you want the background on runes, it provides that. But there wasn’t specific instructions regarding how to use the runes themselves. Just an example. Overall I felt it did a good job of being easily digestible and concise. In this book, I got more than I had hoped for. Most "Spell" books are just big cookbooks to conjure magic. This book actually gives insight to prepare your perspective about what is to come. From Astrology to Numerology, all of it is relevant. This definitely takes you on a journey and is a great beginners guide. Worth the read if this is something you are looking to glean more about.

In our history books, we know a lot of different Witch Trials. In the US, there was Salem, MA; a few in Scotland, a few in England, and a few in Germany and elsewhere. But, it is in Germany where the death toll is the highest, which surprised me. The biggest horrifying thought, that I learned in this book, was that even today, there are still people who are blamed for bad things happening and a mob can still attack those for “being a witch.” The duology explains the history of witches as well as the different religions and places where there is spirituality and mysticism. I found the information by Gardener in the book fascinating and how Wicca came into being. It is upsetting that the definition of witchcraft is so large and different depending upon where you are in the world. In history, a midwife could be considered a witch and stoned for it. Plus, there are just so many different types of witches!Astrology, numerology and various divinations were used and explained in the books.
