excellent book.....
I bought this book to break down a beginning graphic design course that I will be teaching. The outline of the book is smart, the right order and good beginning materials to cover. Someone somewhere commented that the old cover of the earlier edition made more sense. This cover has no real white space! It's nothing really. The inside layout is better and much improved and more "user friendly"= readability - from the older edition. Great book, I'll be keeping my eye on the authors for future works.

So helpful!
I love the way this book is organized. In a way it is like a textbook, yet it is not dull or too heavy. The information is concise and to the point. There are exercises to build design skills at the end of each chapter. I even love the paper that this book is printed on....and I never comment on that. This is one of my go-to books on graphic design.

Highly Recommend
I bought this book for my summer class - Intro to Visual Communication - and have been completely happy with the book. It is very concise and informative. I recommend it for anyone in the PR field or anyone designing posters, advertisements, etc!

Great intro to graphic design
Book received was used, but like new, with very minimal sign of wear. I purchased this book for a journalism class which reference the book quite often. It is a great resource to introduce you to the fundamentals of graphic design, and is done in such a way that will age well as technology advances. The principles outlined are not specific to a certain time, and will be just as helpful a few years down the road as it is today. My only disappointment was, shortly after ordering I found the book available for free as a pdf online. Had I know that I probably wouldn't have purchased the book, but I decided to keep it as I like having a hard copy for study materials.

Best book for creating advertising
I had to get this book for my advertising design course. I will say it is the best "textbook" I've ever gotten. Such a easy read and very fun and fascinating. I'm glad to be keeping this for future reference when making ads.

I needed this for school and it came in handy, and I'm keeping it because I can use it in my field. It breaks down concepts well.

Doesn't practice what it preaches
Overall, the text of this book is good, but the design and examples contradict it. Just look at the cover--there's hardly any white space! The example designs are very busy and don't lead the eye well. They make it hard to learn what they're teaching. Even the text, which in general is good, has grammar mistakes that distract from their message. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who is trying to develop a design sense since it is a little misleading. It's too bad, this could've been a good book.

Great Reference Book
I used this for one of my instructional design courses. It is a great reference book to keep on hand.

Five Stars
Such a great book!

Needs better editing
Do not recommend reading this on a PC. The pages do not line up on the PC. It was better when I switched to a tablet. There are a lot of typos in the book and the wording and fonts make it not so easy to keep reading.

Disappointing for a design book
For a book about improving graphic design, I was disappointed that the layout and fonts of the book itself were visually distracting; for instance, too many font types, sizes and colors on a a page, an imaged or patterned background making the words hard to read, a mix of layout styles. As well, I didn't find the examples given aesthetically pleasing, regardless of how modern they are supposed to be.
