Great low-cost laser with great black & white quality.
This printer was easy for me to set up, without plugging it into my PC or using an ethernet cable. I set it up using my wireless network. It's a great printer for the price point and I love the duplex printing. It's quick, quiet and even has a eco-mode so that it goes to sleep when not being used. The toner is easily changed and the paper is easily loaded. One thing to note that those not familiar with networks might not realize is that most home internet services do not come with a static (non-changing) IP, which means the printer will not have a static IP. When the printer is connected to a wireless network, it's automatically given an IP address. When your modem, router or this printer are rebooted, a different IP address could be assigned to it. If that happens, you cann't print until you find the new IP address (from the network settings on the LCD display on the printer itself) & update the printer settings on the computer you're trying to print from with this new address(For Windows: Devices & Printers>Printer Properties>Ports tab>AddPort>Canon MFNP Port, then enter the new IP address of the printer>Next>Finish). It's an easy fix, by going thru the menu and pressing a few buttons, then doing the same on your computer and is easily explained in the manual, but it's something that a lot of people would not realize happens. It does work with Airprint, so if you set it up, you can print directly from your Apple products such as your iPhone or iPad also. You can also set it up to print directly from google docs, although, I have had issues with it losing it's connectivity to both services. All in all, this is a great laser printer for a home office and services the needs of most home offices. The toner lasts a long time, print quality is great and the replacement toner cartridges are inexpensive.

Good printer, failed scanner
My review is about the printing and scanning functions. I have not used the Fax function: The Good: The price is decent compared to other brands. I have been using it for about 7 months for work. I use it every day for all my printing and scanning needs. I have been a rather heavy user during those 7 months. I have gone through 3 cartridges. I have it plugged into my USB directly so i don't have a lot of comments about the Wi-Fi capabilities. I have installed software to print from my Android phone and it does work through the Wi-Fi. I did not buy it for that purpose so i have no real critique of that other than it works. I didn't have any issues setting up the software or the printer and that was a plus. The Bad: The scanner feed is terrible. 100% of everything you feed will be as askew. I try to place it ever so carefully in the tray. I move the guides as close to the page as close as i can and all the pages are still off. Fortunately my needs for scanning do not require the scan to be perfect so it hasn't been a big issue. When i have to scan something and i want it to be perfect, i need to place it on the glass and feed it page by page. The results are perfect when using the glass. I can only assume you would have the same exact situation when dealing with the fax machine function. The Ugly: About 10 percent of the time when i'm feeding a document, it gets jammed. I pull the sheet out and have no idea why the page was rejected. You then have to put the sheets back together and try again from the beginning. Never fails that i put in a stack of 20 things to scan and on page 18 it jams and makes you start all over. This happens entirely too frequent for my liking. If it isn't the jamming, it is the frequent crashing of the MFToolbox while scanning that causes headaches. It goes through 18 pages and then you are hit with the dreaded "MFToolbox has stopped responding." Again, you get to start over from the beginning after clicking all the error messages, cancelling the job and restarting the software. In summary, i may have to look for a more robust scanner and use this for printing only. While it isn't an issue to have a bunch of documents slightly askew, it just isn't very professional. If this were a car, i would be excited to trade it in. One more tip for anyone buying this printer: If you can afford it, buy the original toner. I purchased a toner that was about 4 times cheaper and the type is lighter and thinner. I have tried monkeying with the settings to make it darker with no success.

Worst product ever
[Update in November 2017] I've owned this printer since October 2014. The experience was terrible and now it's even worse. This printer brings nothing but frustration. Finally I saw Canon released their 2017 drivers for Windows 10 64 bit. Since yesterday I have been trying to get it to work. I removed everything from the system; reinstalled the latest driver; reinstalled 4.9 Toolbox; Updated the firmware. It still doesn't scan at all and keeps reporting communication error. Then I installed [Windows 32-bit & 64-bit] Patch for Network Scan, USB Scan following Canon's instruction on their support website. Still nothing works. It prints but never scans. This is honestly the worst product experience in my life. I have a Brother 2740 at my office. It lost wireless connection while scanning too. I updated its firmware and reinstall the driver two days ago and everything works smoothly. I thought the Canon would be the same easy fix since they have their updated driver, software and firmware. But I was wrong and went through the same horrible experience I went through several months ago. This product is not one of the worst. It is THE WORST ever. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've used many printers and this one is a complete frustration. Worst product ever. Since my OS was upgraded to Windows 10, the scanning function of this printer has never worked. Initially I could sporadically use the wireless to scan - 1 or 2 times out of ten, and Canon didn't have a driver for Windows 10! Can you imagine that, Windows 10 had been out for months and Canon had no driver for it? So I had to start using USB. I bought this printer mainly for the wireless function but I had to connect it using USB to make it work. It worked for several months using USB. Then it got worst. Recently the USB stopped working too - it kept saying communication problem. Then I installed Canon's newest driver and patch software - THREE TIMES today. It just doesn't work at all. Every time I scan, it runs (very slowly) for a while and in the end, no exception, the printer reports communication error - the same error I got in the last year or so. I have to say this printer is a piece of junk - excuse for my language but I'm really frustrated by this product. Will NEVER buy Canon again!

Almost a perfect printer
This is almost a perfect printer for both wired and wireless. The setup is very easy if you know what you are doing. The printer is connected to the router with Ethernet cable for faster speed, also turn on wireless access. I didn't even bother to use the installation disk, all computers which use Windows 10 whether wired or wireless can identify the printer and install the driver immediately. The next is to setup all phones and tablets. All it required was to download a Canon Business printer app. The app can find the printer automatically. Up until then, I've almost 80% done with the setup. The next is to fine tune the printer. There are quite a few ways to do those, either using Remote UI from mobile devices, or using the installation disk which is quite good. I did install the software in one of the machines so that I can access the printer easily. What you need is the IP address of the printer so that you pin the machine from your browser. Once done, the setup is completed, and yes, I did not even bother to use the menu screen on the printer. The print quality is quite good better than my previous Canon. The only problem that I had is that the printer can only connect to 2.4GHz network, which is not favorable, and the toner is really a starter, which can only print for about 200 pages. I replace the starter toner immediately after I opened the box with the one which I ordered from Amazon with lift time warranty. Other than those, it is a great printer and the price is wonderful. Update: This printer works flawlessly. Never experiencing any signal drops. If anyone would like to explore all the functionality of what this printer can do, it would be necessary to install the software from the disk, "tool box" and "driver" at the minimum. It makes big differences. After having this printer for more than a month, I am very pleased to have this one in my office. The best part is that I can scan, copy, or even print to a file folder into a network sever in PDF format. It is a very nice feature if you don't need a hard copy but rather immediately e-mail the doc out. All those features will require the installation of drivers and tool box from the disk inside of the package.

Satisfied with this printer
Printer arrived on time and in good shape. This was our first Canon and we bought it based on good reviews here and also that it was the number one laser on Consumer Reports online. The print, copy and scan quality is very good. In general we have not had good luck with wireless printers so we hooked this up with a USB cable and did not try the wireless. My husband I both agree that the software inside the printer (display window) and in the drivers is not very intuitive and they seems to assume that you have prior knowledge of Canon printers which we did not have. Without belaboring the point, here is one good example: To start a scan from the PC you open up MF Toolbox. But it seems there is no way manipulate a scan. So a little Google research indicated that we needed ScanGear to do that. A little more research indicated that ScanGear should have come along with the printer driver. We looked and looked but could not find ScanGear. A call to Canon pointed us to a subtle checkbox on MF Toolbox that said: "Display the Scanner Driver". We checked the box and Voila - there was ScanGear. Now it seems to us they could of said a number of more easily understood things like: "Start ScanGear" or "Scanner Options". Hope you get my point. We would buy this printer again.

Look elsewhere for features
Up front: I'd recommend against this device based on the LCD display alone. It is a key interface on the system yet has a very low-quality, squishy feel and has not been calibrated properly for touch. In order to activate acknowledgement buttons at the bottom of the screen we must use our fingernails to press as closely as possible to the edge of the screen. Touch-point appears to be 1/4" off the actual location touched. When touched, buttons will often change color (indicating registration they have been touched) but will not activate the function when released (no beep, no function). Often they must be pressed two or three times to activate. I would be surprised if the LCD survives the warranty period or beyond. While the slicksheet appears to promise better features, many are poorly-implemented or poor quality. While the device will connect to wired or wireless network it lacks native features one would expect from a network-connected device such as scan to SMB or even scan via the web GUI. I do not believe Linux SANE currently supports this device and manufacturer only provides Linux printer drivers. The device does support an app for scan/print to/from smartphone that I passed on due to permissions requested. The only positives to the device are it's automatic document feeder and duplex print capability. However the ADF often jams and I have yet to have success with more than 5-6 pages in the feeder. At the cost it's okay for a home-use device for someone needing duplex print capability and a large paper reservoir. Those looking for a network-connected device should review other options. Those needing scanning with an ADF may consider the device but I would recommend finding a test unit first to ensure it feeds your typical paper properly.

NOT REALLY a WIFI Product - ONLY printer is WIFI- NOT SCANNER - NO USB CABLES INCLUDED - NEEDED for SCANNING!!
NOT REALLY a WIFI Product - ONLY printer - NOT SCANNER - NO CABLES INCLUDED!! I purchased this product. Installed it based on the manual. Pretty basic installation and ease of install if you've had multiple experiences installing something before. BUT, NO USB cable included with the system. NO LAN cable included with the system. That was okay for ME because I happened to have a USB cable - an amazon basic that worked well, but IF YOU DON'T have one, and REALLY wanted to SCAN - then this JUST BECOMES a BOAT ANCHOR or a VERY LARGE BRICK!!! The Canon SPECS are MISLEADING. They scanning via USB or LAN Network. Sorry, but these days, I think of Network as WIFI. Poor feeble me. What Canon meant: ONLY SCANNING VIA CONNECTED CABLE OF SOME KIND. Kind of pointless and useless in today's environment. I traded out my Inkjet all-in-one - TRUE WIFI for a Canon Laser all-in-one PARTIAL WIFI. Disappointing and unexpected. I wanted a laser printer because we do a lot of forms in our practice and my experience with laser toner is that it is MUCH less expensive than inkjet. Interestingly, a Popular Mechanics Editor was recently heard saying inkjet ink's cost can often be more expensive than BELUGA CAVIAR per ounce! Also, my experience has been that Laser Toner does NOT bleed like inkjet on labels and other items that might be exposed to moisture. So, the swap was procured. Now I'm rather sorry I did it! But, the footprint of the Canon is nice and compact, the laser printing is fine especially with smaller fonts, the registration process for CANON was fine, the installation process was fine - EXCEPT NO CABLE SO YOU CAN'T SCAN OUT OF THE BOX if you need to, the WIFI surprise was less than pleasurable, and, in case you weren't aware, the front panel of the printer is a TOUCH SCREEN in case you, as I, are looking for the button to progress down thru the menu or move forward to the next screen and cannot figure out where it is!!

All and all, and awesome reliable printer by Canon!
I purchased this about 3 years ago and am barely writing a review. I'm sure they have newer models by now, but for the price you can't go wrong with this. To this day my toner has yet to run out. And I do use it quite frequently--not like a place of business might--but to print and mail out forms, and my kids use it regularly to print homework assignments. It also prints double sided and is pretty fast (5-10 seconds per page depending on file size and if you are printing on both sides), unlike an inkjet printer which can take a lot longer to print a full sheet. Keep in mind, it is only a black & white printer and will not print anything in color. However, the scanner does scan in full color or B&W at 300dpi which is perfect for most uses. I personally use it to scan and digitize my artwork and it looks great. The gem in this multifunction scanner/printer is the auto document feeder (ADF), which will also feed double sided paper. I have digitize all of my old documents and said my "goodbyes" to the clutter of paperwork that builds up over the years. The ADF is high speed as well and has yet to jam on me. With old printers, I've had the 'stretchy' effect from the feeder roller not perfect feeding the document with the scanner. This one has yet to give me that problem. As for the other functions like fax, they seem to be easy to use. I haven't had any use to fax anything as of yet, but I'm sure it will work just great when I do. All and all, and awesome reliable printer by Canon. Keep up the great quality of products!
