Crystal-clear glass and reliable hold zero
Crystal-clear glass and reliable hold zero I’ve had the chance to use the Vortex Spitfire 3x Prism Scope for a few weeks, and it’s impressed me in almost every way. Right out of the box, it feels solid and well-made. The glass is crisp and bright, with a wide enough field of view to make target acquisition easy. The EBR-556B reticle is sharp, uncluttered, and provides useful holdover points without overwhelming the sight picture. The 3x magnification hits a sweet spot for mid-range shooting—close enough for quick target transitions but with just enough reach to stretch out and make precise shots. I also like that the reticle is etched, meaning it’s still visible even if the illumination is off or the battery dies. Illumination is daylight-bright on higher settings, but I find myself keeping it low most of the time. Mounting was straightforward, and once sighted in, it has held zero through range trips and some bumps. Eye relief is decent—tight but manageable if you mount it carefully. One thing to keep in mind is that it’s not as forgiving as a red dot; you need a consistent cheek weld to get a full sight picture. Also, while compact for a prism optic, it’s heavier than a simple red dot. Bottom line: A rugged, dependable optic with excellent glass and a practical reticle. If you want a step up from a red dot for an AR-style rifle without jumping into high magnification, this is a great option.

Excelent
Fantastic!!! I feel the price is perfect for this. I love how it has the reticle etched in so if your batteries die, you can still use. Unlike if a red dot batteries die its useless. I made a 2 click adjustment the first 10 rounds and has been spot on ever since. I am a Vortex fan now and have bought 3 other vortex optics since.

Poor Man's ACOG!
This is a really good optic. In fact, it is pretty much perfect. I like Red Dots because they are fast and allow a gun to be used when its dark out. The vortex has all the benefits of a red dot and all the benefits of a small fixed power scope. Most red dots, aren't magnified which means that if your vision isn't perfect it can be hard to hit small targets or targets that are farther away. Since I am a civilian and spend most of my shooting time on the range (not clearing houses in Afghanistan), I'll trade the little extra speed that comes with having a zero magnification red dot in exchange for being able to shoot more accurately. Because this is a low power scope you can see objects clearly at across the room distances (less than 10 feet isn't the greatest) and very clearly from 10 feet out to a few hundred yards. Of course you could buy a flip up magnifier for an eotech or aimpoint, but they cost twice as much, take up your entire rail, unbalance your rifle and are generally just bulky. Besides 3x seems to work fine at close range and distance so there is no need to switch back and forth. As a red dot and a magnified scope the vortex is a perfect compromise. However, this setup isn't perfect if you want your back up iron sights to co-witness. First, the magnification is sufficiently high to mostly obscure the front sight to the point where it is barely visible, and 2nd, the eye relief on this scope isn't infinite, your eye must be no more than 2 inches or so away for the site to work properly... Because I'm pretty big, I had to remove the flip ups so that the scope could sit further back and be used more naturally. However, because of the etched reticle, having no backup irons is not at all problematic they way it would be on most red dots because if your battery dies or the lights stop working you can continue using your optic just as you would a normal scope... it doesn't disappear into oblivion. I considered buying an ACOG, but simply couldn't justify the price. Furthermore, in many ways the vortex is actually better. The light is brighter because it uses batteries and there is no tritium that slowly dims until it dies out entirely in ten years or so requiring a costly replacement. Besides, you can buy 10 years worth of batteries for no more than 10 bucks. After all, the batteries are available everywhere and I stock them for a whole host of other equipment. I also love the fact that I didn't have to mount the scope on a base... which is much more of a pain than most people realize. Another extremely positive feature of this scope is the picatinny rails. My AR is a basic model (no fancy hand guards)... So this scope provides a place for me to put a flashlight (just by attaching scope rings to it) and a laser (if needed) without crazy Frankenstein mounts. Finally with the life time warranty you really just can't go wrong. 1/4th the price of an ACOG with equal functionality.

... an extremely crisp optic for the price and I like the reticle
This is an extremely crisp optic for the price and I like the reticle. Mounting and zeroing was easy. Tight groups out to 100 yards, haven't worked out past that yet. I think I'm going to freefloat and mount a bipod on the rifle this is on and have kind of a DMR-type weapon. I really like the niche this fills. Some people have complained about the eye relief or how close you have to mount it. I was able to scoot it forward just enough to be able to squeeze in an MBUS, however you would need to have a way of quickly removing the optic (I plan to stick a small nut wrench for it in my grip compartment) to be able to access this. Your other option would be offset sights which might work. I might also buy a cheap reflex sight that could mount to the on-optic picatinny rails just for fun, but this seems slightly cheesy and tacticool to me. As for eye relief, I think it's fine. You'll want to practice bringing it to a firing position with repeatable results so you don't have to worry about it. There is a bit of wiggle room where you can still see your reticle and field of view, but not a lot. One cool thing, I'm able to use the both-eyes-open method with this to some degree. I've seen it mentioned that you can close the front cap with your reticle illuminated and use it as a reflex sight that way; I've tried this and it takes practice but it does work decently well. If you needed it in a pinch I think you'd be fine with either method (cap down or cap up). BUY this optic if you are considering it. It's an awesome product and the warranty is ubeatable. If you don't like it, return it. My only gripe is that it doesn't come on a QD mount but I am satisfied with my above workaround. The nice thing about the prismatic vs. a red dot in this regard is that if you lose power, you still have the reticle, so it's not as big a concern to me.
