Passable, but not the reverend Father we've come to love
When I saw the name of Don Camillo on a DVD divorced from the name Fernandel I had to buy it to see if the definitive performances of the rugged, pragmatic country priest recorded so long ago had been surpassed. They have NOT. The acting is good, the set pieces, episodes in the ideological war between Priest and Communist Mayor (who is not as Godless as he would claim on occasion) are skilfully delineated. But the Don Camillo/Peppone relationship is so rooted in the character's shared past fighting the Germans as partisans, their shared love of their countrymen and country, and their mutual understanding of what it is to be Italian in a small town/village just after the War... that to update the tales to the early 80's even if it means fresh faced dollies with pouty American cheerleader type lips is to somehow detach the characters from the clockwork that makes them go.Terence Hill is a good Camillo of the '80's, intelligent, understanding, compassionate, pragmatic as Fernandel's (or Guareschi's written original) but he lacks that shared peasant background with Comrade Botazzi!SO! buy this disc, it will entertain and is beautifully photographed, were Italian villages ever so sun drenched? You would see this and want to visit the location it is so beautiful - run to the Po if you must, but nevertheless keep your copies of the definitive Fernandel performances, subtitles and all, and if you have none, buy those as well; for there the true visual Don Camillo lies.
