Can I roll my own? My own string on the spools that is?

You certainly can, yes. It'll save you alot of money, over the life of the trimmer, as well. All you can do is to try. If it seems like it isn't the thing for you to have to do, then you can buy spools (# AF-100), that are already pre-wound with the required .065"= (1.65mm), diameter line on them.

Do you have to use round line or can you use the maxi edge star shaped line?

I'm using the non-rounded trimmer line, and it feeds just fine. I absolutely prefer the non-rounded "star" shaped line also - far better cutting.

What is the difference bewteen beste620 and beste620ff?

Honestly I don't know, this black and decker is the best I've purchased. The button on the handle feeds the line is so easy. I love it great power. So happy with it
