It's in the detail
This is a scholarly work on the importance of detail in landscape architecture design and drawing. The book features some of the most highly acclaimed architects and their work; claiming that it is the detail in their design and drawing that has made them the best. The author makes a study of emerging trends from 2001 to the present day found in landscape architecture.Forty recently completed designs are highlighted. For each design there are various colour photographs taken at different angles and detailed drawings, specially commissioned for the book, which include elevation drawings. These are accompanied by construction details and a description. This lends a consistent style to the book. The book is divided into four chapters relating to parks, cultural works, civic works and those on the waterfront. There are designs here that you will instantly recognise such as the famous biomes of The Eden Project and the landscaping of The Thames Barrier Park. Others will be less familiar but still very much of interest. Works have been chosen from around the world, from America to China. Each project, viewed in this way, is a revelation. In addition, there is a directory of details such as lawn, planting, facade or column and also a directory of the landscape architects included. This book is intended for architects, engineers and landscape architects. It is also of interest to landscape gardeners. Those already working in these disciplines will find the book a useful reference; whilst students should find it an inspiration. As a garden designer I found the examples thought-provoking; the buildings of interest and the gardens, where shown, stimulating. This beautifully-produced book could sit happily on many readers' shelves.

OVERRATED!
I bought this book whilst I was a postgraduate student of landscape architecture. I was hoping to obtain some good examples of quality construction drawing so I could detail my project to a high standard. The promise of a CD ROM full of drawings was an extra lure in parting me with my hard earned cash. The book is beautifully organised, the photography is great and the projects that have been showcased are, for the most part, very interesting. Were it marketed along the same lines as "Futurescapes" or other such coffee table books, I would have awarded it more than two stars. But this is a book about construction detailing: the drawings are unresolved, poorly annotated and rarely dimensioned. For this reason the book was a huge let down, hence the poor score.I rarely give bad reviews but I thought it best to balance the slew of five star ratings this book has (imo undeservedly) received.

Detail in Contempoary Landscape Architecture
An excellent book for all students and professionals within the Landscape Industry. The lack of training in these skills means that one has to improve by using additional resources such as this book. I would highly recommend this book to any University or Practice as part of their library!
