a classic feature length film a gem
Pack up your troubles 1932 is a classic that has decent quality to say it was made in 1932 the film has a special thing about it that i ant explain because this film is entertaining and original they are so may great scenes including the great story scene where stan falls asleep , the final chase is class and the stunts and falls from both men are amazing the story starts of as a war theme and then the story turns to stan and ollie looking aftef a child who does a great job as a fallen soilders daughter .I thìnk the film is good because raymond mccarey who directed du k soup frpm the marx brothers directed this with charles rodgers who directed classics like me and my pal , the other short their first mistake is the typical fare with laurel and hardy adopting a baby the short soon becomes original as olie has some classisc falls involving a lamp , and stan thinking theres a ghost in the room as he buggers up the light connection , overall a classic with memorable moments but the only downside is the colour versions and putting pants on phillip which has humourous scenes but just falls flat .

L&H BRING UP BABY! LAUGH UNTIL YOU CRY!
This is a review of the Region 2 Universal Pictures DVD, Volume 15, of their Laurel & Hardy series. This DVD is the fifteenth in a wonderful series, encompassing all the brilliant duo’s short and feature films. Each contains a mixture of silents and talkies, in a set for the connoisseur. The majority of the films have been restored. They appear in gloriously crisp B&W, not entirely pristine and flawless, given their age, but certainly beautiful to watch. The sound and music are generally good to excellent. Many of the talkies appear on the disc in both B&W, AND as computer-coloured versions; choose which you prefer. Some reviewers have criticised the provision of both versions, but this set is intended to be a complete collection of L&H works.Volume 15 contains their second feature film, from mid 1932, plus 2 shorts. Of these, one is a two-reel silent from late 1927, the other, also a 2 reeler, from late 1932. It is worth mentioning that all 3 films date from before the introduction of Hollywood’s moral straight-jacket, the ‘Hays’ Code. The silent film, a 19 minute gem, grew out of an idea from Stan. It is particularly significant: though it is not the first film to star both L&H, it is generally regarded as the first that can be termed a ‘Laurel and Hardy’ film. They are the central characters and stars, in action together throughout. Also, from this film onwards, they are billed together in their films, as a recognised double act. However, their very recognisable characters, and their equally ubiquitous outfits (particularly their hats and ties) are not yet fixed. Certainly not: Stan Laurel wears a Scottish kilt! This is probably one of the pair’s most memorable outings, and undoubtedly, one of the funniest. Stan again, by now in his late 30s, shows unbelievable energy, physical flexibility, and comic timing, whilst Ollie Hardy’s expressive and elastic face is often a sight to behold. The feature, 68 minutes long, is set in a typical L&H ‘rented apartment’ interior. And it has a sizeable cast, including the director (also of the later short) George Marshall, as a murderous cook. The ever-reliable James Finlayson plays the General. But, other than our duo, the star is undoubtedly little Jacqui Lyn, as ‘Eddie’s Baby’. Jacquie, born in Croydon, was not yet 4 years old, when the film was shot: she had a brief career, largely in Hal Roach’s ‘Our Gang’ (another of the producer’s regular cinema acts). Jacquie is an extraordinary little girl, who easily holds her own with L&H. The film is both touching and funny, basing the humour more on situation comedy than slapstick. Stan was an (uncredited) writer of the film. The final film, a 21 minute short, is something of an oddity. Marshall has a cameo, Ollie’s wife is played by L&H regular Mae Busch, but this is largely a two-hander. It is suggested that the film, as written, ran slightly longer, with a neat, satisfactory, resolution to the story. However, Stan added so many improvisations, that the film ran up to budget and the final scenes were dropped. So the film ends slightly abruptly, in mid air. It is funny, but less so than many other L&H films, and it feels slightly awkward and stilted. The overall quality here however is such, that the set well deserves 5 Stars.
