Can you switch the presentation to off or black out ?

Yes - you can black it out in presentation mode.

Does this work with an ipad?

I have never tried it with an iPad but it worked fine with any Android-based device, showing up as a mouse. If iOS supports this feature it should work equally as well!

What batteries does this use?

Standard AA batteries - my Lithium ones have lasted a year so far and no loss of performance yet.
