I was not a believer
I was skeptical about this Argentinian pressing (2024) amazon listing looks like it’s an 88 old stock.I can’t remember how my original 1988 pressing sounded but back then the equipment was ok but the fine tuning was not. This pressing sounds great, vocal and lively with nice capture of the instruments.

Tracy Chapman's Classic Debut Still Thrills, Thirty-Seven Years Later
When the self-titled debut album by American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman made its first bow back in 1988, it was an instant hit. A thoughtful, melodic and appealing set of songs delivered in Chapman's soulful, somewhat downbeat but deeply emotive voice, I had not heard the album in its entirety for about thirty years, but decided to buy a copy as I only ever had the album on cassette. The big hit singles, such as 'Fast Car' and 'Baby Can I Hold You' are frequently played on the radio, but listening to them alongside the 'deeper' album cuts, such as 'If Not Now', and 'Across The Lines' brings a new freshness, and makes me appreciate Chapman's songcraft and understated vocal approach even more in 2025 than I did back in 1988. The album delivers a considerable emotional punch, helped by the spare backing tracks beautifully captured by producer David Kershenbaum, which really allow Chapman's talemt to shine all the stronger.Tracy Chapman may never have quite scaled the same heights again in her lengthy career, but her auspicious debut album ushered in a fine, deeply gifted singer-songwriter to a global audience. Her star shines on. Brilliant album.

Fast Car
I bought this for one track, only, first car which everyone has heard at some point. However, I have since listen to the album back to front more times than I can count. I don’t know if Tracy is still making music, and this song was released in the early 80s, I think it sounds way ahead of its time.
