The main protagonist is an otaku like most main characters of this genre, being an anime fan isn't the main focus of Yoji Itami. In fact he is a rather competent military officer, albeit a somewhat unwilling one. After Tokyo thwarted an attack of a fantasy army sent by an overly ambitious emperor - the Japanese Army (JSDF) tasks Itami to spearhead recon operations having received reports of his heroics and quick thinking during the attack. (It was actually his day off and his plans to attend a comic convention were ruined lol.) Yes there are some hilariously one sided battles between modern military with guns vs medieval army wielding nothing more than bows and spears - but much of the show is about establishing relations with the locals and learning about the culture, economy, resources, etc about this strange land (pretty much standard fantasy fare: magic, dragons, elves, etc). Unfortunately the ruling imperial monarchy is not very wise (as evidenced by their attempt to conquer our world) and makes things difficult but their unpopularity makes it easy for the JSDF to win the favor of the locals as they help them with several problems and even establish a new city of trade and commerce between our worlds. On top of all this Itami also has the burden of dealing with our politicians back home (the UN) and taking care of all the friends he makes during his adventures. Strong recommendation! Review: I love this series - Is it the best quality, most unique story line out there? Maybe not, but it is at times funny, and at other times serious, when it needs be. Japan is momentarily caught with its pants down when a portal appears in what I think is Tokyo. And through this portal, or gate, (hence the name) comes an army of creatures from another dimension. Unbeknownst to them though, they are pushed back by modern weapons. To keep any more attacks taking them by surprise they send a scouting party through the gate to secure it on the other side. In the course of a few episodes, they fight a red dragon, rescue an elven girl, take on a mage apprentice and a priestess of death that's over 900 years old but looks like a Lolita! It is a very pro-military show and while the forces are supposed to be Japanese, you can see a lot of American weapons and tactical influences. There are some moral decisions that individuals have to make between doing the diplomatic thing and doing the right thing.

Story and characters are outstanding - extremely better than title and synopsis suggest
Like most Japanese anime on blu-ray the video and audio quality are so much better than what you get from streaming services. The upscaling and color on a 4K OLED TV is outstanding. One nice aspect of the story is that it is written somewhat realistically in how the Japanese SDF would actually react to the scenario of a gate linking our world to a world of dragons, elves, sorcerers, etc. Even the political actions of the USA, Russia, and China towards Japan and its visitors are what you would expect from them. 😀 The character development, personalities of the main characters, the references to well known classic films, unfolding relationships between characters, the dialog (Japanese) that doesn't resort to dumbed down 4-letter words are fantastic. The story has gems scattered throughout with respect to humor, characters, and surprises. The politics controlling how the JSDF conduct operations in the world on the other side of the gate and how exceptions are made come right out of the history books. This is a wonderful anime series with a satisfying ending.

We Aren't So Different, After All
- Synopsis: Life was the usual routine with its fast-paced, city life. Until one fateful day, an army that mysteriously appears, begins to attack the citizens. The JSDF quickly responds, and in conjunction with the police force, as well as many others, they eventually route the enemies. After the incident, they discover a mysterious gate. As such, the government decides to send their soldiers to explore what lies beyond this gate. And thus, the adventures of our protagonist begins. ========================================================================================================== - Comments: Contains a mix of Fantasy, Military, Action, and plenty of other genres. Feels natural and interesting in how it was presented. The characters don’t always get an in-depth backstory, but the interactions are often entertaining. Not to mention plenty of cute ladies, too. Let the waifu wars begin? - Analysis: Conflict is always going to be around. So long as people cannot see eye-to-eye with each other, there will often be wars that eventually follows. History serves as a good example of this. Many people tend to focus on the aspects that makes other people different from oneself. For those that are able to see past these differences, and/or embrace them, this can often times lead to friendship/relationships. - Features: English audio, and Japanese audio with English subtitles. Includes 24 episodes on 3 Blu-rays. The run-time is about 10 hours. This anime is rated TV-MA for violence, blood, language, and sexual content/fan-service. Feel free to refer to my low-quality PS Vita pictures as a reference. - Conclusion: An entertaining anime that involves much conflict, and befriending others from another world via a mysterious gate. The interactions can be whacky to help lighten the mood, but there are plenty of serious underlying tones, as well. There's plenty of characters to like/dislike with their wide range of various designs/personalities. If you’re a viewer ready for a long ride mixed with Fantasy, Military, Action, cute girls, and fan-service, this anime might be for you. ========================================================================================================== - Recommendations: Re:Zero, Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records, Blue Exorcist, Cross Ange, Hagure Yuusha no Estetica, Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar, Lord Marksman and Vanadis, Needless, Those Who Hunt Elves, Full Metal Alchemist, Code:Breaker, Tokyo ESP, Buso Renkin, BlazBlue: Alter Memory, Sky Wizards Academy, Tales of the Abyss, Black Bullet, God Eater, Claymore, K, Hyperdimension Neptunia The Animation, and Persona 4 The Animation.

Oh, must have. A genre fan gets sucked into one of the tropes, not stuck somewhere.
Awesome story discovered at online sight. Must have. Hope for more seasons. A genre fan gets sucked into one of the tropes; not totally uncontroled travel as so not to be cutoff from home. Vol 1 Ep 6 - look for the ascending star.

Although Gate seems to start of as your typical harem style series, with a male protagonist and multiple female companions, it really is more of a political/ social drama with a lot of light humor mixed in. Most of the story centers around the lead character's heroic adventures while in the background both sides are trying to manipulate events in their favor ie the USA wanting to move in and exploit the goldmine of natural resources the new world represents or the Empires weakening of it's own allies to ensure they don't rebel. As the back cover says there are monsters on both sides of the Gate. The JSDF is also a refreshing change to most anime as they are portrayed as professional soldiers and aren't just there to kill or be killed (a staple of many action style anime) in droves. That being said the technological advantage they have is very front and center, but I found the violence to be very muted compared to other series. Lastly, and I hope they do, the series wraps up nicely at the end but leaves plenty of room for a second part with many little questions unanswered. and ideas that could be expanded on. Hopefully the first part does well enough and we'll see a Gate II like they did for Another world with my cellphone or something like that
