Q: Can my kids look at bugs the catch?

If the bugs are no longer "moving" this is a great scope to look at details!

Q: Will the base fit a 9-10 cm petri dish?

No - the distance between the slide clips is only 5.08 cm. you can take the clips off but the elevated base is the 5.08 cm measurement.

Q: Can you attach a camera?

I don't see a way to attach a camera. It is a basic stereo microscope that works well at a desk or in the field.

Q: Can we use it to see protozoa / live cultures effectively?

The magnification is not power enough. You'd better buy a biological microscope like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F3H5EMI
