Kockney Koi Water Wurzel Barley Straw Twin Pack Water Wurzel by Kockney Koi is chopped barley straw designed to control algae, blanket weed and other green water problem in garden ponds and water features. Barley straw is natural and therefore is perfectly fine to use with fish and wildlife. Each pod contains a internal float to ensure the Water Wurzel is kept at the top of the water column where oxygen levels are highest and each pod treats up to 4000 litres lasting for four months, its advised to replace the Water Wurzel 1 month before removing the old one to ensure its effectiveness. It takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks for the barley straw to become active and because the barley straw is chopped it increases the surface area making it much more effective.

Could do with being bigger
I use these in my pond to rid algae and blanket weed. They could do with being bigger as I would need to order 4 for the size of my pond but couldn’t see any larger ones even though they used to be a lot bigger? However, they do the job well. You literally throw them in and leave them to do their job. They do help to help to clear a pond but always better to use before your pond gets green. Mine suffered badly after my filter became blocked and drained my water out so had to refill with tap water. Nightmare. Used these and a pond bomb and lots of filter changes, pump cleans and literally dragging out blanket weed by hand. Pond getting much clearer now. Use these regularly and they keep your pond clear naturally. Considering getting one of the boxes this month to refill with straw myself more regularly until pond established again. Fish happy though and babies again.

Worked well in a very small pond.
These are ideal for a very small pond and work well in mine after my marginal plants were knocked over (not sure of the culprit) which led to a massive algae bloom. They do take a couple of weeks to work, however, they are safe to use in wildlife ponds. I have resident frogs in my pond and these do not bother them. In a larger pond, you might need a few of these straw bags which might make them not as cost effective. On the plus side, there is a Cork which makes the top float therefore easy to remove when they need changing. My pond is roughly 1m sq (approx 3') at the surface with a maximum depth of 25.5 cm (approx 10").

Does the job
Don’t think these are as thick as previous ones I have purchased. Had to use two rather than one but they do work.

Waste of money
Firstly I used to be involved in farming and am fully aware how much barley straw costs. The amount used in these probaly cost 1p. Then there is some cheap plastic netting which probably cost 5p at the most. So value for money is awfulBut someone had to put them together and it was convenient to buy them already made. So if they worked I would not be moaning.Given the size of my pond I am supposed to need 1 of these at a time. Put first one in did nothing. Yes I know it needs weeks to commence working. After 4 weeks chucked second one in. Still nothing. After 2 months ( that is first one has been in pond 8 weeks and both together for 4 weeks) nothing. In fact blanket weed was growing on the bales.I always sign of my reviews stating this is a genuine review and I purchased this product to prove it is not a sponsored post. Given my content this time I probably did not need to! I am not a habitual moaner. See most of my many reviews to see how positive I try to be.

Works well in small exterior fish pond.
Been in use now for some time and is working perfectly, no sign of green algae which grew very quickly in the past which meant cleaning out the black plastic tank regularly. From a pack of two, I still have the second one in reserve but up to now not needed. Very Pleased.
