Great book
Been gardening in the ground for years. Moved to new location and did not have time or space to prep ground soil for a decent garden. Had heard about this method, so ordered this book. Very well written and easy to understand. Full of good tips. My first year using the book for my mentor, I had a pretty decent crop. This year will be a Great crop/

Propagating a Horticultural Myth
This is an attractive, well designed book. It makes you want to start growing things in pots.It does, however, propagate one startlingly bad idea. The author advocates putting drainage material - "crocks..., stones, gravel and pieces of polystyrene packaging" - in the bottom of pots to increase drainage. This is a horticultural myth; it doesn't work. In fact, it makes the situation worse. Water will not flow through a fine material (potting soil) into a coarser material (gravel) until the fine material is completely saturated. Imagine a sponge resting on gravel. If you pour water into the sponge it will not flow into the gravel until the sponge is thoroughly saturated. This effect is called "perching", where the water sits in the soil above the gravel , creating a soggy, root suffocating bog. Just of the opposite of good drainage. For a more complete description of this effect see - http://puyallup.wsu.edu/~linda%20chalker-scott/horticultural%20myths_files/Myths/Container%20drainage.pdf

Great Book!
Colored photos and good information. I've done all container vegetable gardening this year and it's been great. Wish I had done it sooner.

Full of useful information for growing veg and fruit in pots.
Great book. So useful if your interested in growing veg/ fruit in pots. For each veg or fruit gives advice about size of pot to use and how to grow veg/fruit. Also gives recommendations on the best varieties to grow in pots. Very informative.

wonderful ideas for food grown in pots
The ideas in this book are clear, concise and doable. I have tried many of the suggestions and by Sept. I will know if these ideas actually translate into fine edibles for me and my husband!
