A debut novel that really delivers
Simian Caucus: "The Meek Shall Save the Earth" When I was younger I read the adventure classics like Treasure Island, King Solomon's Mines, The Lost World, and others. I remember the way those stories made me feel, how they carried me away and made me want to stay in the exotic settings. Now as an adult, revisiting that special experience with a book is rare, but that is exactly how Simian Caucus made me feel. It's an adult story, and a fantasy, but I was caught up in it just the way I used to be with those earlier tales I read as a kid. That's just the best thing that can come from a book. The main character, Roger, has such problems at the beginning, it's almost a little depressing, but then quickly things begin to happen and a grand adventure unfolds. There is not a dull moment, with many twists and unexpected plot elements. I especially liked how parts of the beginning, set in a huge mansion in the Jazz Age, seamlessly merge into the contemporary story about a young man's struggle, and how he is changed forever by a collection of the most remarkable characters. I wished I could meet Celine, the elderly woman who is another main character. She is grand and inspiring. There is also an 18 year old girl, a spectacular misfit with a heart of gold. The writing is precise but so descriptive, and every scene feels like it's up on a screen to watch. The places and dialogue are real and surround the reader with ease. I should warn you that this is not a conventional story at all, and it takes a little letting go in places, but it's so much fun that I didn't have any problem with that. There are fast sports cars and wise orangutans and yachts and a real odyssey. The bad guy is a classic villain. In places there are profound observations. But, the plot is utterly original and well imagined. You just go with it. My sister and my 82 year old mother both read Simian Caucus, and hooted out loud in places. It's witty and inspiring without even trying to be. There is a message about the destruction of the environment, and that theme is woven in from time to time. Still, it's not preachy at all, I didn't feel like this was a "message" book or anything. Quite the opposite, it just entertained me and made me shed a tear at the end. I'm actually going to read it again sometime. I don't want to spoil it for you, but will say that Simian Caucus won't disappoint. I loved it. Highly recommended. Excellent story. Excellent read!
I couldn't put this book down. This writer is so... READABLE. I gave no thought at all to the transition of paragraphs, chapters, the turning of pages or the passage of time. The characters and plot are not what anyone would expect, but the author's excellent writing style and skills take you right along with the fabulous fantasy. While it's not a direct comparison, the readability and addictiveness reminds me of The Hobbit, where you are so into the characters and the next page that it never occurs to you that it's unconventional. I gave it to my roommate, who devoured it in less than 36 hours. I don't think she slept. If this book is not made into a movie, Hollywood will secure its place in the Idiot Hall of Fame.

great first novel
I was thoroughly impressed with this intricate adventure. It weaves an exotic story with humor and pathos, and it's truly a unique tale that deals with relevant environmental issues and complex relationships. I was always interested to turn the next page to find out what new twist awaited me and was not disappointed. I don't want to give any of the story away - you will just have to enjoy the ride for yourself. You will be happy you did.
