Garden Spells

I downloaded this book on a whim and I'm so very glad that I did. It turned out to be unexpectedly lovely and so layered. It's well written with great characterisation and it really gives a flavour of small town life, both with its frustrations and it's joys. The story is both complex and simple all at once and it's not really a love story, it's about two sisters who come to learn the truth of who they really are. The magical realism is perfectly handled with just a small touch here and there that's never so bold as to make the story unreal but just strong enough to give it that sunshine glow. An honestly lovely read. I've already downloaded the second book in the series and I would heartily recommend this to anyone looking for something heartwarming and redemptive.

Lovely story of a small town and it's slightly eccentric residents.Magic is woven into to every page, yet so many worries and fears people have, are intertwined and acknowledged.It isn't a deep or heavy book to read, but cover so much with the lightess of touches.Decades old jealousy and uncertainty, taking a long time to see your own skills, constructing walls around your heart, and recognising you do not have to be like your parents, unless you choose to.Would highly recommend to everyone

I've returned to this book a few times in my life now. It's a wonderful escape into the world of the Waverleys where food and flowers are magical and love is a beautiful thing.The setting and plot is beautifully described; whimsical and heart felt, reassuring and a little exciting too.If you like a love story, with a little mouth watering magic then this is the perfect book for you.

If you don't believe magic is possible then don't read this book. Claire Waverley lives alone in the family house with its mysterious garden which blooms all the year round and an apple tree which is definitely not what it seems. Everything is peaceful and calm just how she likes it until several events serve to disrupt her routine. A new neighbour moves in next door and her estranged sister returns to the house. Claire's life will never be the same again. I half expected the book to be too sweet and cloying but it wasn't. There was just a hint of acid in it to prevent it being too much like eating a whole box of chocolates in one sitting. It is an easy read and a charming one and if you like Christina Jones then you will possibly like this as well.

This is such a sweet, unexpectedly good book. I bought it because the pretty cover caught my eye and I read it the same afternoon it arrived!It reminded me a lot of the movie "Practical magic", which I love. This is a magical, comforting, quirky read and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I love all the characters and the storyline keeps you hooked and turning the page until you have soaked up every last tidbit. My only complaint is that the book is too short - I wanted more. I immediately ordered The Girl who Chased the Moon & The Sugar Queen and loved those books as well. Waiting for The Peach Keeper now. Sarah Addison Allen is so talented and really knowws how to weave a beautiful novel. I wish her a fast recovery from breast cancer - this is one writer who has lots more stories to tell!

This book made me smile practically the whole way through. It's a story of love and hope and dysfunctional families that will go some way to curing heartache from any cause. Beautifully written and paced perfectly so it's hard to put down. Recommended for anyone needing a bit of sunshine in their life.

I originally came across this book in my local library and enjoyed it so much it stayed in my mind. Two years later I wanted to read it again so was delighted to be able to download it and enjoy it again as I couldn't find it in my library. I think someone may have kept it. I never read books twice. It delivers magic and romance and who doesn't need that in their life. I also want to try the recipes. A perfect feel good book.
