Have Record Companies No Shame?
I bought this when it was released, and have been listening to it the last couple of nights. Looking at Amazon to check availability of the individual albums (fuhgeddaboudit!), I'm astonished to see that this collection itself is gone -- there's one (1!) to be had from a vendor in CA, for $95.00!I wish there were something to say, like "Write your Congressman" -- but alas . . . There's no point in writing a "review," except to say that this is a Must Have for any jazz musician or listener. From track to track to track, an enormous variety of different "styles," both originals and standards, performed by several of the greatest -- and least pretentious -- players in the history of the art, clearly having and sharing a great good time. Music for the ages -- I can't imagine ever becoming bored with these performances. How can these discs not be in current release? If you're reading these reviews, you must be interested in this set. Look for it! (Try GEMM.com for a start.) There've got to be some copies around out there, and for less than $95; jazz people ain't the 1%.

Long Overdue
I bought two LPs of this very tight group in the late 60s. Sadly all of them were lost over the years and although I managed to get one of them on CD I looked in vain for the other. This is very good music and the piano playing of Kellaway is delighful. The company that put together this collection is to be congratulated for resurrecting a great jazz quintet. It is a shame that because of "new" jazz and crossover music that these older recordings seem to be neglected by the major US lables. Thankfully a US company called Mosaic puts out limited editions of great jazz that is ignored by Columbia, Sony et al.

At last!
I've been waiting for CD release of these three rare and amazing LP's, orginally issued on the Mainstream label, for a very long time. If you've never heard this stellar quintet, get ready for amazing solos, great arrangements, and more humor than you've probably heard in a jazz record. What a quintet! Terry and Brookmeyer blend, spar and joke with amazing empathy and punchy solos, and Roger Kellaway shows that the horns don't have a monopoly on humor. Terrific rhythm section in Bill Crow and Dave Bailey. Kudos to Lonehill Jazz, my hands-down choice for jazz label of the year. Check them out--they are rescuing gems like this on a regular basis.

Must Have
A must have for Clark Terry fans. Clark and Bob are at their best playing with and off each other. Cool bop and funky bluesy jazz will keep you smiling.I have heard there was friction between the two but the music they made is fantastic.I waited for many many years for these to come out on CD because I wore out the LPs.

Joyous
I bought 20+ jazz CDs this year, and I thought my collection might now be complete. However, I'm glad I didn't finish before buying this one (even though I already had part of it--"The Power of Positive Swinging"). It's wonderous, joyous, swinging jazz.

one of the best little groups ever
Lane Hauck has it exactly right. Thank your lucky stars these recordings are available again. Just one thing to add - the balance of Terry's wit, Brookmeyer's intellect, and Kellaway's unpredictability give this group a remarkable three-way punch.

A Jazz Fan's "Must Have"
This particular Quintet has always figured very large in this reviewer's estimation ever since the original recordings came out on good old vinyl. The interaction between the front-line horns is a pure delight and they are run extremely close, for star billing, by the rhythm section in which Roger Kellaway is quite outstanding. Some of the stuff he puts out is truly amazing and well worth the price of admission! This is a band which swings like the proverbial clappers and should be in every Jazz fan's CD/vinyl collection - in my case BOTH collections - it's that good !!

Every note a gem!
I remember these tracks from many years ago, and decided to revisit them. I am so pleased I did! Clark Terry's trumpet and flugelhorn playing is sheer joy - every note is precisely executed and framed, with such a playful sparkle. I used not to be so impressed with Bob Brookmeyer, but time has done wonders! He is clever, creative and rich-toned. The numbers themselves are so of their time, but still fresh. Tete a tete, for example, is a vibrant romp, but elegantly polished. If you think you've heard all there is in the field of the blues, try Terry's vocal on My gal! It's a hoot! And with two generous discs it's great value!
