DMCEmbroidery Floss Collector's Tin (35 Colors)

Love the colors. I always enjoy getting products in a cute decorative tin too.

The new colors have been out a while, but I didn't need them until I found a pattern I liked that called for some of them. At that point I remembered the collector's box that had been advertised and started shopping. When I saw this at amazon, the price was about the same as anywhere else one might look (just a little under retail). The skeins would of course be less if bought individually in a craft store, but getting all at once, in a nice box, seemed convenient and likely to save in the long run (no future trips for other colors as the need might arise, or disappointment when the colors wanted are out of stock). Amazon processed the order and the set came quickly and in excellent new condition despite rattling around loose in their packaging with other purchases. The only surprise was how darn large the box is. I've gotten sets of up to 36 new or themed colors in years past, always in compact plastic boxes/packaging no more than four and a half by six and a half inches (plus about an inch in depth), and I guess that's what I was expecting here as well. While no deeper than those, this collector's box is about seven and three quarters inches by fourteen (yes, fourteen!) inches in size. The thing is plain huge! No tucking this into a drawer somewhere; when the floss is used up (or stored elsewhere), the box could become a permanent holder for something else. There is no hinge on the lid and it (the lid) is pretty shallow, so I don't think it would be suitable as a travel kit (it seems like it could pop right open and spill its contents, though I might be wrong about that). Sitting flat on a stitching table to hold notions or what have you, it would probably be fine. The cardboard sleeve that labels it does hold both pieces together very well if not discarded (I'll be keeping the sleeve for that reason). I don't know whether to recommend this over individual skeins or not, but I did want to share some details on the box for those who might be wondering about it. The floss is, of course, DMC, and the colors are lovely, so if that's what you are looking for, the contents won't disappoint.

To start off, you're getting DMC floss. The quality of this floss is just as high as you'd expect from this brand. Very soft fibres, easy to separate the individual strands, and consistent colour between individual purchases. This is the second set of this floss I've purchased, but the first from Amazon, and there's no difference in colour between the two.The single most stand-out detail about this set is the colour choice. It gives you a little more yellows, greens, and reds to your set, but where it really shines is the grey and purple. Good variety in purple has been lacking from the standard six strand set for a while, and this new set bridges the gap between a lot of the previously-available shades. The last 13 colours in the set range from a very light pinkish-purple to a deep orchid, though it favours the more subtle shades. The additional greys that are included are on the lighter end of the spectrum, and much of the yellows and greens are nice mid-tones.I only have two small complaints about this set: First, when buying the set in the collector's tin like this, you get the floss glued to a sheet of acetate. This isn't so much of a problem, since the floss labels are a heavy plastic that aren't going to tear off. The glue isn't strong, so you're not going to have a hard time pulling the floss off the acetate sheet. Unless, that is, the glue missed the label and the floss itself was glued down. This was the case with about half of the skeins in the case I received. I had to be very careful when pulling the floss off, because I didn't want to pull off part of the skein and risk tangling it. Once, it caught on the end of the skein, and pulled a few strands out of the six, leaving me with a mess to untangle. Luckily, the floss was going straight onto bobbins, but this was an unnecessary time sink in what is already a time-consuming process.Second, the numbers bother me. They're numbered 1-35. If you have other lines of DMC floss, this can get in the way of your organisation, as previously the solid colours started at 150, and earlier numbers were reserved for variegated floss. When the set was first announced, I thought the numbers were placeholders, and am dismayed as to why DMC would choose to mess up my stash box like this.

It was shipped in a basic envelope instead of a more protective box, so it's pretty banged up. I'm glad I didn't buy it for the tin itself. Thankfully, none of the tin's contents are damaged.

Tin is about as deep as three skeins of floss. Average thickness, easily dented but very light. Metallic gold paint on the outside. DMC logo embossed in lower right corner of the lid.Each skein is individually marked 1 to 35. They are lightly adhered to a clear plastic sheet very neatly and in numerical order.A folded paper insert contains 3 flower motif patterns that use only the included colors. Brief instructions for cross stich, backstitch and French knot are included. A summary about the company is provided in multiple languages including English, Spanish, French among others.Also contains a thin sheet of bubble wrap inside.10/10 would buy again, recommended.
