A very enjoyable read
Lyn Andrews is definitely an author you want to discover time and again. She writes with real clarity, wit and warmth. I have read two of her novels and I don't intend to stop there. The characters are well developed, perhaps with this story, I had to keep going back to make sure I'd kept up with them all as there are quite a few introduced at the beginning. We meet an impoverished family from London who have moved to Liverpool to start again but their starting again means almost dragging themselves out of the gutter. Our heroine Dee is not the typical beauty one often meets in these novels, she's short-sighted but clever and the one everyone in her family turns to. The mother of this family ends up accepting the rough and ready neighbours she's forced to live alongside but the characters we meet, they may be poor or not too comfortable; but have the warmth and kindness to give all they can to help someone in need. It is this community spirit that is often lacking in today's society and that doesn't matter which part of the class divide you come from.As World War One begins, we see the young men of the street starting to get involved in the jingoistic fervour of joining up - inevitably, there is always the one character who doesn't get caught up in the patriotic fever; the young Irish rebel cousin with his eye on the main chance and the blarney for the girls. With the enlisting in the Pals battalions, we as 21st Century citizens know the appalling tragedy about to take place and we get this from the part written after 1st July 1916; where families are receiving telegrams advising of wounded, dead or missing. The characters that Lyn Andrews has written about are people that you feel are truly real - that they're people you might know but definitely people you come to care about. Those who are the villains? Well, you feel that they get what they truly deserve. There's an interesting end to the story here; not the usual but definitely one that gives you what everyone wanted come the end of the War - hope for a brighter futureReally enjoyed this read and was sad when it finished.

Hardship and heartache
This author shows real empathy with her characters. The problems experienced by these families in Liverpool together with their experiences during WW1 were brilliantly woven into the story. The balance of heartache and happiness was excellent. As was the differing attitudes and behaviour of the various families.Looking forward to more Lyn Andrews novels.

A good read
I have enjoyed reading this showing the snobbery at that time, how community came together when needed. Once I started to read I couldn't put it down loved it
