Bootleg Vol. IV: The Soul Of Truth

I actually originally heard this double-disc set when I checked it out from my local library back in 2017. But I liked it so much that I decided to go the extra mile & purchase the CD itself. One thing that's actually really great about this compilation is that it includes some Gospel songs that Johnny Cash wrote himself. The compilation includes three separate Gospel albums, one of which from 1975 that was untitled & unreleased. This 2-disc set really helps cement just how committed Johnny Cash was to tithing his music to devote a certain percentage to serving God. I would recommend this compilation to any & every Johnny Cash fan of any & every age!

This is an amazing collection of works! I love Johnny Cash's gritty music style. I have another couple of his albums from way back when but was looking for what of his I didn't have when I ran across this. It has a huge selection of songs old and new. After one listen-through I discovered a few I don't really care for but several instantly made my list of all-time favorite hymns and the rest of very likable. I liked it so well I picked up a second copy to give to someone else I think will like it.

I should have already rated this set. but better late than never. if you like gospel and songs of faith . this is just wonderful. I have bought all of his gospel cds. I say buy it now----john

This double CD package is worth every cent for the christian country listener. He brings the feeling to the listener that you are all welcome to join the family on the back porch for a sing a-long on a Sunday afternoon. The selection of song contain a lot of old favorites, and some to become new favorites. His voice resonates with the soul of a family that works the soil to stay alive. Depending on the favor of God and His blessings to make to the next year, the family sings to understand the life-long struggle. These songs portray the life of the working man as he reaches out to whoever is listening. This CD set is worth twice the going rate.

Irregardless of your view of this artist and his lifestyle, this album is beyond a doubt some of his best work, if not THE best work he accomplished. Delightful lyrics, along with the signature John Cash music style, make this easy listening and thought provokingmoments of music. The songs will make you smile, maybe lose a tear or two, and accomplish Mr. Cash's aim of worshiping our Lord God in music. My wife & I have bought several of these for our adult children, we cannot rate Bootleg Vol. IV high enough.Simply one of our best music cd's.

Great collection of songs! Bought as a gift for my mom. Please listen to the cd in its entirety! One song on my moms has a bad skip. I did not know until yesterday when she played it for me. Return window closed yesterday.

A great collection of music. I have some of the other gospel stuff from Johnny Cash and it feels a bit different. An excellent collection just like the rest of the albums in the series. Get them now while you can because they keep going up in price even in the used vein. There is a little different approach then the earlier stuff which for me makes for a more compelling listen. Enjoy

I loved the music ...very up beat...

I'm not a fan of gospel on the whole, but I will make exceptions for a handful of artists. Sister Rosetta Tharpe is one and Johnny Cash is the other. This CD is an essential purchase for those who bought the 63-disc Complete Columbia Album Collection box because it features 3 albums that the otherwise-exhaustive set omits.The first CD features the complete contents of A Believer Sings the Truth, an exhaustive 2-LP set Cash recorded at the same time he recorded his 1979 album Silver. Columbia wasn't interested in releasing a double LP of gospel at that time, so they gave Cash permission to release it on an independent label, though they later released their own version (which is why it should have qualified for the box set). There is great stuff here, including duets with Rosanne and Cindy Cash, and a few tracks aren't actually strictly gospel either. After the disappointing Gospel Road and the boring Precious Memories, Cash gets back up to full speed to deliver a worthy follow-up to his 1968 classic The Holy Land with these songs.Disc 2 starts out with a full album's worth of songs recorded in 1975 that for reasons unknown was never released (though most likely because Precious Memories had just come out). It's actually a better album than most of the stuff Cash was recording for Columbia in the mid-1970s (like the awful John R Cash album) and features an early version of Far Side Banks of Jordan, one of the best Johnny and June duets, which in a later version was a hit single. The rest of disc 2 features the contents of Johnny Cash - Gospel Singer, an album Cash recorded in the early 80s for producer Marty Stuart, but its release was cancelled due to Columbia closing down its gospel label, Priority. Instead, Cash got the rights to farm the album out to another label, though it didn't happen until about 1986 when it came out as Believe in Him. It's also a strong set featuring a remake of the Sun-era classic Belshazzar.One other thing: I've heard people call Cash's autumn-years collection My Mother's Hymn Book a depressing listen. And I've heard that said of some of his prime-of-life gospel works too. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up Soul of Truth but I was pleasantly surprised to find it (for the most part), an upbeat listen that, while it may not convert anyone, will certainly entertain while giving more insight into the faith and values of the man in black.If you shelled out $300 or more for the big box set, it's worth the extra $20 to get hold of this follow-up. I only wish they'd included this material in the main set.

本作は70年代のCashの未発表アルバム1枚分を含む、３枚分のアルバムの音源で構成されたもののようです。既発表の２枚のアルバム(A Believer Sings The Truth & Johnny Cash-Gospel Singer)といってもゴスペル集であるためか日本ではあまり有名なものではなさそうで、結局は幻のアルバムのような３枚分をまとめた公式ブーツレグ集と考えて良いもののようです。従って、録音状態は申し分なく、彼の歌声も好調です。ブーツレグ・シリーズの４作の中では音楽的にも本作が一番充実している内容と思われます。ただし、既発表の２作品をLPやテープ音源でお持ちの方には新鮮味に欠ける部分もあるでしょうが、CD化されていなかったようなら買いの作品だと思います。私にとっては初めて聞く音源ばかりだったので最高の評価をしてみました。掘り出し物でした。
