Still highly regarded for a reason
This edition is so beautiful. That art of the cover, and illustrations throughout are incredible. The book is big enough to allow you to see all the detail. I love the feel of the pages. As for the story itself....Victor Frankenstein is a tenacious scientist who manages to find the secret of life through galvanism and the pursuits of 'dark arts'. “From the midst of this darkness, a sudden light broke in upon me—a light so brilliant and wondrous.” Through these methods, his 'monster' is born, and he immediately regrets it. He describes the 'monster' as deformed and incongruous to this reality, a mockery of life.Frankenstein keeps the details to himself as he tells his story to ensure no one else can replicate what he had done. In turning away from his creation, Frankenstein inadvertently sets the stage for his downfall, and his prejudice becomes a self-fulfiling prophecy. What I found so appealing here was the story structure and the beautiful Gothic prose. Everything unfolds in epistolary correspondence of a young explorer named Robert Walton to his sister. Walton discovered Frankenstein out on an ice floe hunting his 'monster'. Frankenstein heeds Walton to beware his ambition and relates his story as a cautionary tale. The story switches perspective as Frankenstein recounts the tragedy, complete with the creature's narrative that resulted from a heartbreaking confrontation that cements their sworn rivalry. It is the balance between Frankenstein's hubris and the exploration of nurture vs nature that reveals the shocking relevance of this novel. This novel deserves all of its acclaim. The story is infamously misconstrued due to the 1931 film, which is nothing like the book, and more like Peggy Webling's 1927 play. I was surprised to read the eloquence of the creature's dialogue and his sad turn toward malicious vengeance. All he needed was love, but was denied it at every turn. The novel is 90% 'interior', featuring long monologues about the character's feelings and determination as the story progresses. To think Mary was only a teenager when she wrote this leaves me in awe.

Frankenstein
This is one of my favourite books so I tend to collect interesting editions. I first saw this in Waterstones in the UK but didn't have much room in my luggage so I sadly had to give it a miss. But, I was very happy to be able to purchase it when I got back to the States. It's a lovely and unique edition. The illustrations are modern and tastefully done with a gothic feel that adds to the text. I also love the sprayed edges and the cover overlay. There is also a black ribbon bookmark included. Overall a classy and unique edition to add to your library.

Excellent Book But Poor Shipment Protection
The book itself if fantastic, however it came damaged, so I sent it back. It is sad that such a special edition came with zero wrapping or shipping protection.
