The manufacturer or distributor has described its glaze as a \"food-grade sealant\" with no further explanation, but it has been flagged by a California Proposition 65 warning for a reason and the consumer has a right to know why there is such a warning on a product that is meant to promote health. One can only wonder if the glaze is unsafe. When I use this pot, I boil Smart Water in a pan on the stove and let it cool before adding salt. I recently let the water cool too long and made the mistake of putting the pot in the microwave for ten seconds. This resulted in burning sinuses and an acrid odor or taste that was not organic. The thickness of the solid slip increases over time. Therefore, if the slip is poured out in a short enough time the handle would be hollow. However, the walls of the Neti Pot are fairly thick.
