Based on Ray Cooney s record-breaking stage farce, Not Now Darling follows the misadventures of insatiable womaniser Gilbert Bodley (Leslie Phillips), the boss of an exclusive West End fur salon. In order to give his mistress Janie (Julie Ege, Up Pompeii!) an expensive mink coat without upsetting her jealous husband, Gilbert agrees to sell it to her cheap. However things don t go to plan and the tricky transaction creates a hilarious and chaotic chain of events. Co-directed by David Croft (Are You Being Served?), this quick-witted British comedy also features rib-tickling performances from Carry On stars Barbara Windsor, Joan Sims and Peter Butterworth.

Funny, Funny Movie... I Laughed a LOT..!
.. and I do enjoy seeing naked ladies in the bath... but please be warned that if you are looking to update your old copy of this movie with this Odeon "Best Of British" version... DON'T BOTHER.It is the same old Salm Dunk Video copy, full frame and all. The reason I bought this new Odeon release is because the amazon item page promised me a 16.9 wide screen print and I like to fill all 46" of my television monitor with a good quality picture. It was not to be. Odeon are not at fault here.. the entire blame falls on amazon. The back of the dvd box states that it is a 4:3 picture and had I known that I would have saved myself 9 quid plus overseas postage... so now I have two virtually identical copies of "Not Now, Darling" courtesy of amazon's false item description and I remain, dear reader, a victim of bollocks!!The movie itself is quite good fun in a "Carry On" kind of vein but with better dialogue. Still, be warned of the aspect ratio... it is not what amazon tells you it is (1.66:1 / 16.9) and the picture quality (both sharpness and colour) may suffer when being played on a large screen.Having said that, the movie looks to have been filmed in 4:3 but, in 1973, I seriously doubt that it was projected in that ratio. I would like to view it in a theatrical aspect, not camera negative. This looks very much like a 16mm print that has been transferred to video and I feel it is a little overpriced for what you get.The dvd plays ALL Regions.

Oh dear
Watching this made something adundantly clear to me. That the Carry On series really was a class above pretty much everything else that attempted to replicate it. Perhaps if left as the stage play it was taken from this film would have been passable, but the transition to the screen has not done it any justice at all. Stage plays that get transformed inherently need to leave behind that element of the stage or otherwise they end up being a play, filmed, minus any cues for where you're meant to laugh from other more obliging audience members. That sums this film up. All but about 10 minutes of this excrutiatingly unfunny film is shot in one place, with the various actors scurrying around being 'funny' whilst the women repeatedly try to find ways to flash as much flesh as possible in their screentime. This is bad enough, but the set is more LONG than it is wide and as a result, when actors turn to the back of the set the dialogue becomes hard to hear. Just like a real stage play, right? Yay. Also, there is barely no incidental music - that very thing which filled the gaps in other films and only serves to point out how incomplete and flat the whole thing is.As far as the film itself goes - well I struggle to comprehend why cinema felt the need in the 70s to portray men as impossibly over-sexed morons that are incapable of fidelity and, worse, to portray women as either fusty old frumps or as nothing more than eternally jiggling and perennially undressed haridens. Yes I know that Carry On rarely portrayed either sex in a more flattering light than this, but this film comes across as sleazy. The obvious cuts to minimize boobie flashes only really exemplifies how gratuitous the whole thing is.I'm scathing about it because I expected better from Joan Sims and Barbara Windsor. If you're a fan of quality British Cinema give this a miss.

FUN TO WATCH!
I had no expectations to this film and have to confess I only bought it because of Julie Ege, however I was pleasantly surprised.According to Ege (who sadly passed away in 2008), the cast did this film as a favour to the director, had a great time filming it and this rubbs off on the screen. The whole cast is great; Joan Sims is a treat, Julie Ege is as lovely as ever and there are some great laughts, espesially involving the brilliant Barbara Windsor, I often found myself laughing out loud.Sure it is slightly dated, but somehow that just adds to the charm, this is comedy as they don't make it anymore.

Based on a play and it shows!
Not as much fun or funny as I had hoped. It didn't get a very high rating here but one never knows. The perky Barbara Windsor is,well, perky and a delight as usual.

A brilliant british farce that's fast and furious and a laugh ...
A brilliant british farce that's fast and furious and a laugh a minute.Great characters in this film and it's very saucy has one would expect from the actors and actresses in the film "BARBARA WINDSOR" at her very cheeky best ,"JULIA EGE" fitted in well has the glamour girl and was at her best showing how good she was in the british comedies that she has appeared in. This film is none stop comedy throughout.

A well used story
This one is a take off of a very successful stage show the original of which is about to be released later this year. Some nice Barbara Windsor in this version.
