Best portable scanner I've owned
Easiest to program / use scanner I've ever had, though "loading" desired sources is a little counter-intuitive. (Read and follow the instructions.) Reception is a little marginal with the included rubber ducky antenna. Get the RadioShack Telecsoping Scanner Antenna by RoHS (20-006) for $15 for much improved reception. The RS antenna is over kill in terms of the frequency range it covers (and read the instructions - you "tune" the antenna for the frequency range you are monitoring by selecting how many segments of the antenna to extend). The built-in library of sources makes finding traffic you want to listen to easy. Very handy if you find yourself in another city during your travels. The down side of the built in library is that, not having installed the CD software and hooked the scanner up to a PC, I don't know how to load the frequency(s) for a source I find on a web site listing for a source that is not in the library (and the library is a bit out-of-date). For example, I know one airport went to new frequencies for ground control - I cannot listen because the new frequencies are not in the library. Charging is slow when using a laptop as the charging source. You'll keep the scanner plugged in much of the time you are not carrying it around. And most IMPORTANT - heed the instruction cautions regarding not inadvertently loading too many sources into a playlist. Drill down to the very bottom level of the library and choose what you want. Get careless and check a County and you'll load every source in the county and your fingers will become numb with the task of deleting all the unwanted source.

Worst Radio Shack Experience Ever!!!
I was unable to program scanner. There was ABSOLUTELY NO customer support from Radio Shack. At first I believed that our local emergency commutations had gone digital! However after checking they remain analog 800 trunking. They have however rebanded, so I tried to update the frequency database. I used the provided software. The software would not connect to the update site for either the data base update or film ware upgrade. This service was provided by Radio Reference through Radio Shack. I tried to update directly from Radio Reference but was required to purchase a membership to download. This seems to be a simple to use scanner. However without any customer service or ability to update the film ware or data base the scanner is USELESS!

Not what it was cracked up to be.
You can only update by downloading from a site that has out dated information. The site still shows Tulsa, Oklahoma on conventional channels when they have been running trunk for over 5 years. I tried to reprogram with the trunk channels but, it will only allow me to do conventional. If you are in an area that uses trunk do not buy this scanner.

Good scanner but it takes work to get it going.
First let me preface this review by saying that I previously owned a Radio Shack programmable scanner which very well, so I knew what frequencies I could receive at home. Although the scanner works well now, this is what I had to do to get it to work.1. Out of the box the scanner's firmware version was 0.3 releases below the current version so I installed the accompanying software on my laptop and upgraded the firmware.2. Next I noticed that many of the local agencies (including trunked systems) were not listed in the library. The scanner came loaded with library version 6. I upgraded the library via software to version 395 (quite a jump).3. Now the frequencies that I wanted to monitor were listed, however after setting up my playlists I found that it was only receiving a few conventional frequencies. After a number of postings on Amazon's support pages and a few replies I noticed one customer review which indicated that the antenna was inadequate. I therefore ordered a new and better antenna which made all the difference in the world. The scanner is now working satisfactorily, at least I am receiving the same frequencies that I add with my first scanner. There is some indication that it goes through batteries quite rapidly (it lasts about three days under fairly constant use) but this could be the Costco batteries rather than the scanner. So I gave this scanner three stars since it takes a bit of work and research in order to get it up to speed. But it is a learning experience.

Perfect
This product met all my expectations. I had a reqular non-trunking scanner in the past and decided I wanted to be able to listen to my local county's sherrif's calls again bu tknew I needed a trunking scanner. Luckily fo rme my local sherrif still uses an analog system. With this in mind I didn't need to part with a large sum of money to get an analog trunking scanner. I am able to listen to my local public safety services and a few more stations and do so reliably. The product is well made, performs as advertised and is easy to operate once you read the manual, a little internet reseach greatly improved my knowledge and I have it set up like I want. There are more features than I can use but it's clear and alerts me to the particular channel in use. the provided software is great to use and once you master it can control the entire set up of the scanner with the software. The bottom line is that I got exactly what I wanted. It works like I want and I like it. Sure I may tweak it with a new antenna but it works fine as is. I will upgrade to digital one day but don't need to at this point until my local sherrif upgrades their radios. I can't listen to surrounding localities but thats fine.
