Hi- yes there ought to be a fibrous mat included, plus instructions. Demand those from the vendor. On the inside of the stainless steel tray, there’s a max fill line for fueling. Longer matches, or an aim-n-flame lighter would probably be safest but it’s like lighting a candle. The unit does give off a lot of heat by the way, and ought to be lit in place and not moved— sloshing fuel on fire is no good.

Q: Does this need any heat protection underneath?

I do not have anything underneath mine and it’s on a granite kitchen top. It does not get hot because of the stone. I absolutely love mine. My only complaint would be I wish it would burn longer. You get about 45 minutes to an hour I usually get three uses out of one large bottle.

Extremely sturdy because of the stone I love mine great ambience, great conversation piece just wish it burned a little bit longer per use.
